Today's random song of the day is Brick is Red.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
A fist is fast
And Jimmy's cast
Hang me

A white moon's hot
The other side's not
Hang me

It's not time for me for me to go
It's not time for me for me to go

My eyes have turned
Just the color of diamond
Just the color
The frayed color of ice

I don't know, his parents (my aunt and uncle) are real new-agey. You'll probably have to give some Swedish organic health bars made of grass instead.

Are you lookin' for the motherlode?

That is a great lyric- I'd be happy if I'd thought of it and I'm 20 years his senior. Can I use it? :)

I don't know, you'll have to ask my cousin.

You know what, thats absolutely brilliant.

My house is taller than me.

I love that.

I would love to read this poem! Do you have it to post or can you get it?

Yeah, I have a copy of it

The Story of Bricks
Bricks and rocks
The water is falling
The bees are being
My house is taller than me
But the bricks are smaller than me
And the bugs too
The magical colors of fish and the rainbow
The sun is setting
The sun is yellow
Hello bricks
The Summer is here again

yeah i like the song. sometimes i wish i was a brick. you would have no worries at all! and you'd lie there all day soaking in the sun and living as you wanted to. then i thought....no

On my brother's old Yamamha guitar, I used to turn the distortion up full, then take out all the treble and turn the tone knob on the guitar off completely. I loved emulating the solo with that soft, draggy, mush sound! :)

Great tone, tube distortion how I like it... Even if I'm not a Marshall guy I wish I had a JCM 800 to nail that tone

The Pixies didn't use Marshalls 'til Doolittle, as far as I'm aware. It's most likely his Peavey you see on the DVD live show, or maybe a house amp from the studio SR was recorded in (the name eludes me right now). Try switching to your neck pickup (humbucker ideally), and roll the tone down a little, that sounds like what Joey is doing.

Sounds like a Television's song.

I wish they'd kept in the extra lyrics. I actually use "brick is red, and Hitler's dead" as the signature for one of my e-mail accounts.

It's probly one of my favorite Pixies songs.

I love this song. Really relaxed and cool. Its also my wife's favourite Pixies track - she 'got into' the Pixies when we first met - I even got her to see them live, but her interest waned a touch once she had me firmly in her clutches. But when this one comes on she starts singing and jiggling about. Marvellous.

like it a lot. being the last track on the album (at least it's a last track on my LP, don't know if it's side a or b) and quite different from the rest on surfer rosa, it somehow points in the direction of doolittle and everything that followed.

I love this song but have no fuckin clue what its on about.
I actually posted a similar thread to this a while ago but got a very low response rate.
Keep up the random songs of the day threads tho, it means we can discuss random songs individually instead of having that pointless recurring debate about what the best song is.
im lovin your work song oracle.

Great song. Like "River Euphrates", this song is great and then the side is over. It makes you want to flip the album over to hear more-- something you could keep doing all day.

I'm not a big fan of this track - I always thought Joey's guitar tone sounded like Santana, which is not a good thing. Then again, my least favourite Pixies song is a good head and shoulders above most other bands.

I also thought it was fish but didn't want to get into another Honda style thread, it just makes more sense as in casting a fishing rod. Cheers for clearing up the lyrics for the demo version drugged bunny, I've wanted to know what they were for ages now. As for the the pretty colour of ice line, I always though it was the frayed colour ice.

For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began...

Right...

--

A fish is fast/And Jimmy's cast/Hang me!
The white moon's hot/The other side's not/Hang me!
It's not time for me to go/It's not time for me to go
My eyes [are turned/do turn/return]
Just the color of diamond/It's just a color/The pretty color of ice
Diamond/It's just a color/The pretty color of ice

--

... and the demo version's first verse goes:

--

Brick is red/And Hitler's dead/Hang me!
The Earth's not round/It's shaped like an egg/Hang me!

--

I love playing this song on guitar!

They had that demo version which actually had lyrics during the first "verse" of the song....

A Brick is Red
And it's ________
Hang me

The other side's brown
Its' shaped like an _________
Hang me

...also during the diamond part....it sounds like

"The Pretty color of ice"
vs.
"The Fragile color of ice"

Great sound....drums are rocking...solo is refreshing yet familiar....master piece.

Possibly my fave on the album!
Douglas Posted - 04/05/2004 : 07:51:06
exactly. almost like an instrumental song with that long intro. like it, though it's often skipped when I listen to SR/COP. dunno why
MiscellaneousFiles Posted - 04/05/2004 : 06:27:44
I agree. My guitar playing can be described as "strictly rhythm", but I just had to learn the lead part for Brick is Red. Like many of my favourite Pixies songs, it leaves you wanting more. After that long (for the Pixies) intro it just seems to stop half way through. But I guess that's Pixies Genius in full effect...

Carl Posted - 04/05/2004 : 05:46:40
I always loved that song. It's cool to play on guitar-Joey's lead stuff especially! The lyrics seem to be about westerns-maybe 'Jimmy' is James Stewart. I dunno. I just love the song.
