Today's random song of the day is Alec Eiffel

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Pioneer of aerodynamics
Thought he was a real smart Alec
Thought big but they called it a phallic
Didn't know he was panoramic

Little Eiffel stands in the archways
Keeping low doesn't make no sense

Sometimes people can be oh so dense
Didn't want it but he built it anyway

Little Eiffel stands in the archways
Keeping low doesn't make sense
Keeping low doesn't make no sense
Little Eiffel stands in the archways

Oh Alexander I see you beneath
The archways of aerodynamics.

Black Francis

I reckon it can't be long before we get a song about Brunel. How about it Charles? You couldn't have overlooked him.

Alec Eiffel is one of greatest songs I've ever heard. Like ever. P-P-Pixie Pop Perfection. I could be hear all day crooning about this one song but instead, if I were stuck on a small wooden sinking boat, Trompe Le Monde is the album for me.
OLDMANOTY Posted - 04/12/2007 : 04:10:42
One of the best. Why it wasn't it a bigger 'hit' than Monkey I'll never know. Trompe is my favourite Pixies album.

One of my all-time favorites! I think my favorite three from Trompe are Planet, Alec & Motorway. An amazing song with a great outro!

2) The Pixies, "Alec Eiffel" -- "...a tribute to the French engineer who designed the
Eiffel tower. In the video for this song, the Pixies offer very brief glimpses of
mathematical formulas that make us subliminally more intelligent ... and toward
the end of the song, the non-standard time-signatures remind us that rock music
does not have to be in 4/4 subdivisions."

definitely still one of my favorites, this song (among the many other great tracks) made trompe le monde a car-ride staple for me

One of my faves!!! Awesome wordplay by Frank, sick guitar from Joey!!! I love the line "They didn't want it but he built it anyway". Eric Drew Feldman's synth work really expands the song without taking away from it. The synths add a nice touch, making the song melodic, but it doesn't stop it from rocking like a motherfucker!! And the video is awesome!! Does anyone know if Frank ever used that Gibson (Model ES-175) on any Pixies or FB tracks? He also uses it in the "Los Angeles" video.

Not for me. The outro is too long for a start. I much prefer the single version.

As for Alec Eiffel, yeah I love it to bits. I wanna dance to it in a club. The synth riff is brilliant. It sounds French to me. No coincidence I supppose.

This music is sensational. The littleiffel part, the doesn't make no...SENSE part, and the vocal effects at the end are spectacular. I agree, is one of the best songs from trompe le monde.
And the video? What do yo think about? it's great, isn't it?

One of my very favorites, it was left off 'Death To..' but is on 'Wave Of..', hoorah! Love Joey's solo and the outro. By the way, the single version of 'Gigantic' appears again on the new compilation-have to say I prefare the album version.

One of the Pixies' best songs. What else is there to say?

This song seems too 'light'

I think you can usually tell how an album is going to be by listening to the first 3 songs. Of course I am one of those people who think Trompe is a perfectly good album -- unlike some people! -- so that's where I'm coming from. Anyway, after Planet of Sound's big finish, this song is the icing on the cake. It drives home the point that this album is going to kick ass.

I always thought the lyrics were great. I always thought the last bit sounded like a Japanese poem when you read it on paper:

Oh Alexander I see you beneath
The archway of aerodynamics.

One of my favorite songs. When I hear people speculate about the Pixies mostly playing pre-Bossanova stuff on their new tour, it's songs like this I worry about. I'm sure they will play it.

Great song, some sour notes by the vocals.

I would like it better if it had a more modern Frank Black recording/mix. It's a little treble, but so is the whole album.

simply amazing. one of my top 5 favorite songs

I don't pay a lot of attention to the song database, but I assume the song oracle gets the lyrics for each song from there. I noticed a lot of missing stuff from this and other songs, and I guess I figured I should say something. Not trying to be picky, but even the trivial stuff makes a big difference (maybe only to crazy me? )...Anyhoo, here are the lyrics straight from the liner notes:

Pioneer of aerodynamics (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
[They] thought he was a real smart Alec (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
[He] thought big but they called it a phallic (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
[They] didn't know he was panoramic

Little Eiffel stands in the archway [singular] (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
Keeping low doesn't make no sense

Sometimes people can be oh so dense
[They] didn't want it but he built it anyway (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)

Little Eiffel stands in the archway [singular] (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
Keeping low [don't] make sense
Keeping low doesn't make no -sense! (little Eiffel, little Eiffel)
Little Eiffel stands in the archway [singular]

Oh Alexander I see you beneath
The archway [singular] of aerodynamics.

Oh, and I friggin' love this song. It gets me all punked-up and energized and hyper. I think the majority of Trompe is perfect. Plus, it's a rousing punk rock tribute to an incredible architect and engineer -how often does that reach popular culture?

is it just I who think that the outro feels "christmasy"

I always thought so too--don't know why exactly. Maybe because the oh alexander singing kind of reminds me of that creepy town sing-a-long in When the Grinch Stole Christmas... Or maybe that snowy album cover...
Cheeseman1000 Posted - 03/31/2004 : 09:37:25
This is definitely very cool, I love the synth bit.
Also: "doesn't make no... SENSE!"
Cool random lyrics as well.

This reminds me of springtime, listening to Trompe driving around in the car. This is a Pixies classic.
