Posted - 03/29/2004 : 00:15:07 Lot's of Kurt Cobain stuff in the press at the moment, been reading some of it, mainly to see if there's any mentions of the pixies... none so far. the times have a 2 page feature on him and how much nirvana influenced music, thought it was a bit odd, although hardly surprising, that there was no mention really of who in turn influenced nirvana, or paved the path... then just been looking on nme.com (yeah, i'm really bored, give me a break) and they're giving away a CD called "Kurt's Choice" which features songs that influenced Kurt... Again no Pixies tune... Although it could be to do with licensing, I don't know. Would have been great to have a tune on there though, would have introduced a lot of new people (who keep hearing this name the pixies thrown about but don't know who they are) to their music... The listing (in case you were interested) is:
Mudhoney - 'Touch Me I'm Sick' Rites Of Spring - 'For Want Of' Faith - 'Subject To Change' Iggy Pop - 'Louie Louie / Hang On Sloopy' The Melvins - 'Gluey Porch Treatments' The Butthole Surfers - 'Sweat Loaf' MDC - 'John Wayne Was A Nazi' Gang Of Four - 'At Home He's A Tourist' The Slits - 'Typical Girls' PJ Harvey - 'Dress' The Vaselines - 'Molly's Lips' Leadbelly - 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' Bad Brains - 'Banned In DC'

damn, Dan Peters quit too? that's a shame And Steve Turner losing his edge...that I would have to see to believe. Then again, I guess a dude can't atone for having beer dumped on him after a certain point in his life... |

Tad! Yes! I actually listened to an album of theirs the other day, after a loooong time of not hearing them. It was the one produced by J Mascis (he even plays piano on one of the songs)...i think its called Inhaler. Definitely their strongest album (at least from what I've heard)...there is some sick crunch guitar on that album.
Have you ever heard it, Carolyn? (: |

Go see em. go alone if need be. They are really really good live. At least they were the two times I saw them...but that was before Lukin left the band. |

I think the original 'Molly's Lips' by The Vaselines is my favourite though. Especially the old car horn part. I think I might try and get hold of one of their albums. Kurt also covered their 'Son Of A Gun' and 'Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sumbeam'. All great songs so they should be worth a listen.
Vaselines are sweet, but I think their best song (which he never covered) was "The Day I was a Horse" thats an awesome song. :)
A great song he did cover was "Lake of Fire" and he also covered "Plateau" both Meat Puppets songs, I actually like the originals much better. But I do prefer his version of "Oh, Me" |

Posted - 04/08/2004 : 10:18:56 That comic strip was from a book. I first saw it about 6 months ago and just could not believe someone had created such a piece of shite. It really is so bad its funny. I bet all those 13 years olds lap it up though.
I agree that the NME is the best for music news but it seems to be aimed at 14 year olds, hence all the posters. I tend to just look on their website rather than buying the actual magazine. |

I still find NME the best 'cos they keep abreast of things. Q respect acts such as Dido so they can definitely fuck off and MOJO is for old men. Talk about 'Dad Rock'.
I know NME tend to hype things up too much but I just ignore that and make up my own opinions. Have to say though that they have introduced me to a lot of great bands.
If anyone has any other mags that keep with the times then I'd love to try them out.

I can't find anything I like at the moment. I buy the NME now and again for the gig list in the back, and perhaps to read the odd thing about a band I like. I got the Kurt issue yesterday actually, did anyone else see it? They had a comic strip about Kurt in the centre. I thought it was a little sick, especially the last page.

Recommended. And easy enough to do since they only have the one. 'Rory Rides Me Raw' is the coolest song about a bicycle seat ever. Prove me wrong.

In fact, I'm quite positive that's what it was originally intended for but when I took offense to your post you "changed" what it was there for to make me look like an idiot.

Posted - 04/05/2004 : 10:15:37 There isn't anything about Kurt in it. It's this week's issue that is a Kurt special. The Pixies did get a mention in NME in the issue before last. They were introducing the bands that would be playing the festivals this summer and they basically said how their would have been no Nirvana without the Pixies and that they are one of the greatest three bands ever. To be fair to NME, they do love the Pixies. They voted Doolittle the second best album ever last year.
The CD is OK. The original Leadbelly version of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' is interesting. Not as good but certainly worth having. This is what we are discussung Adnan. We suspect it might be because of licensing.
They did not leave them off because they didn't think they influenced Kurt. They are well aware they did. There is more to it that we don't know about.

American Music and the cover of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? are among the best songs I've ever heard.
