Sorry if this has been disscussed before but I tried doing a search and it went so slowwwww I gave up. So here's my take on the song 'Hey', once again this is another Eraserhead related song. If you've seen the movie you'll know what scenes I'm talking about.

Hey, been trying to meet you:
Dosen't Henry say to Mary something like 'You haven't been around for a while'?

Must be a devil between us:
Referring to the freaky baby type thing.

Or whores in my head, whores at the door, whores in my bed,:
The woman from across the hall is in his head because the film is supposedly Henry's nightmare, and he has that dream within a dream when they're both in the swamp. Whores at the door has relevance to two scenes, the first time she knowcks on his door and later when he's staring at her through the keyhole as she takes another guy into her apartment and whores in my bed when she spends the night with him.

If you go I will surely die:
Henry dies at the end of the movie, after Mary has left him.

Were chained: Henry and Mary are chained by the marriage they're forced into because of the baby.

I can't be arsed writing the rest at I think it's fairly self explanitory with lines like ugh is the sound the mother makes when the baby breaks reffering to Mary's mother's fit and of course, Mary ain't you tired of this huh. Once again apologies if this has been said before.

For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began...

My Brother forced me to watch that movie when i was about nine and it scarred me life.
It's fuckin warped.
Nice theory nonetheless.

It's amazing what mental passageways a four pack of stella and half a dozen joints can open up ;)

It does make sense (The Eraserhead connection). He actually says "Where have you been?" when he gets to Mary's house. Also the whore at the door/bed is pretty similar. Very good connection. I buy it.

boy that film creeped me out. and that baby's lung-goo was icky. it look like a mixture if scrambled egg and porridge. and oh, c'mon, nobody wants that. and the baby babies that mary had in the bed were gross too. and what the hell was that thing henry found and put in the dresser??

I've downloaded it from eMule. It's in english but it doesn't matter 'cause there are few easy dialogues in it.

It's a little pricey, but the box is pretty cool, and the audio and video have all been re-mastered. Looks/sounds really good. There's also an interview with David Lynch that's interesting.

I just got Eraserhead on dvd this past Friday and watched it Saturday.

Where'd you get a copy of this movie on DVD? I've never seen it and have always wanted to, but I'm not buying some dubbed tape from Ebay. If anyone knows where I can get a copy I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I actually already thought of this. Boxcar - wait till face turns blue - you'll never wait so long.

But I don't think so.

Aha! Contrary evidence from Apl4eris's link - above.

Here Comes Your Man:
This is a pre-Pixies song that I wrote when I was about 15. It’s about wino’s and hobos travelling on the trains who dies in the California Earthquake. Before earthquakes everything gets very calm, animals stop talking and birds stop chirping and there’s no wind. It’s very ominous.
I’ve been through a few earthquakes actually ‘cos I grew up in California. I was only in one big one in 1971. I was very young and I slept through it. I’ve been awake through lots of small ones at school and at home. It’s very exciting actually, a very comical thing. It’s like the earth is shaking, and what can you do? Nothing.

The holocaust? I hope not. The lyrics kinda fit though, huh? That's awful! Its such a sweet sounding little song to play acoustic!

thanks apl,
you already posted my list....
i'm sure it's not the complete explanation, so eraserhead could def be involved.

I just got Eraserhead on dvd this past Friday and watched it Saturday. I was sick and had a fever around 102 degrees but had been looking forward to seeing it for so long. Anyways I'm not sure if the fever enhanced the movie or if the movie enhanced the fever but regardless I thought it was really good and am looking forward to watching it again.

I really do like the idea of "Hey" pertaining to the movie. It makes a lot of sense along with all the other Eraserhead references in Frank's work. Anyone know if there is a thread somewhere with the songs that mention or have some connection to the film?

You're welcome!
I like the Eraserhead connection - it's very plausible, and his explanation and yours are not mutualy exclusive. Obviously there was a fascination with that movie (understandably), so it's pretty likely. I think it may be a real good time to watch that movie again, 'cause I think I'm starting to get the baby-fever. eeeeek!

Thanks apl4eris, I missed that thread, very interesting reading. I still think the Eraserhead theory holds water though, he was very vague about the explanation of Hey! Its those 2 lines, 'Mary ain't you tired of this', and 'Uh, is the sound the mother makes when the baby breaks' that won't let me dis-ascociate the two.

For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began...

Hey guy. benji was kind enough to share a transcription of an old NME interview with Frank, where he goes into some detail about song meanings on Doolittle. Of course, you never know how serious he's being, and he always seems to have at least a double if not quadruple meaning, so read at your own risk

The topic got archived (so much activity around here these days, there's no space for all the topics - sorry to bill goodman for not responding -I lost track of the thread!).

Interesting stuff!
