Posted - 03/25/2004 : 18:30:19 A while back, someone asked if anyone had heard Pixies songs on the radio. Couldn't find the original thread, hope this is helpful to whoever cares. My radio usually doesn't leave the college station, but some trendy world music came on, so I just had to move the tuner. Anyways, on 99x, Atlanta's major mainstream rock radio station, one dj played Monkey Gone To Heaven and talked about the world tour for a minute.
Has anyone else heard Pixies songs on mainstream radio? What do you all think about this kind of exposure? Yay or nay? |

Posted - 04/18/2004 : 12:58:16 The Pixies seem to be in that position where pretty much everyone has heard of them, yet they rarely get played on the radio. I don't really think the Pixies in general can be seen as some kind of hidden treasure at this point, although I'm sure certain songs still can.
The other day, I heard the distinctive sounds of "Where Is My Mind?" from a car in a parking lot, but I have no idea whether it was the radio or a CD or tape.

Posted - 04/18/2004 : 11:10:06 I am a little divided... on one hand I like keeping the Pixies on the DL. On the other hand their music is so awesome it would be great to have more of a chance to hear them on the radio. Sharing is good and that will expose a whole new generation to the greatest band.

Posted - 04/18/2004 : 10:28:53 They played Dig For Fire on Channel One, a news station played at a bunch of high schools in the US (or is it elsewhere also?). I think it was...two weeks ago, I meant to make a post about it, but I forgot. |

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 11:12:24 I actually remember hearing more Pixies on 101x in austin back around 2002, than they play now. Strange. I like it better this way anyways. They're -MY- pixies, and I don't like to share. ;-) Plus the radio stations never dig in to the many other songs. Just look how the same songs are repeated on this thread.... Monkey, WIMM, Gigantic, HCYM... -roger.

Posted - 04/15/2004 : 23:46:09 I heard "gigantic" on the radio in Austin on 101x. Pretty cool, but they only play them during their retro lunch hour. I also heard them play "where is my mind?" "Debaser" "here comes your man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" :)

Posted - 03/30/2004 : 11:31:51 I think it's funny when a song from outisde the mainstream comes on the radio or is played somewhere publicly, and you start singing along, and everyone looks at you like you're an alien. The Stills came on the other day at the gym (Still In Love Song), and I was just sort of absent mindedly lip-syncing along, and I got looks like "what the hell song is this, and why do you know it". |

Actually, Drive 105 in Minneapolis plays one Pixies song, which of course is Here Comes Your Man.
The only time I listen to the radio is at work and unfortunately I can't get Radio K to come in so I listen to Drive 105. And Porkbone, they actually say at every single commercial break; "Drive 105 is not owned or operated by Clear Channel Communications." It makes me laugh in disgust as they jump on the "Clear Channel is evil"(which they truly are) bandwagon and try to come off as "independent" radio. When in fact they are owned and operated by Disney, an even bigger conglomerate.
Oh sorry. I listen sometimes, but when commercials come on I immediately press another station or put in a CD. I thought they were owned by ClearChannel because the Pixies show is being promoted by ClearChannel. Oh well, corporate radio is corporate radio.

Posted - 03/27/2004 : 20:23:51 Here in NY, there was this one time back last summer when i was on a delivery (yes, i used to be a pizza delivery boy), i was switching the stations and a krock affiliate station was doing a show called "bitchen camero" or something like that, and i caught the last half of "where is my mind". |

Posted - 03/27/2004 : 19:32:22 In the KC area, we have The Planet which plays a wide mix and we also have an alternative station. I was scanning through the stations and the planet was playing Here Comes Your Man. Since I listen to the alternative station most of the time I had to call them and ask them why they don't play the Pixies and the DJ said "I wish we could". Anyway and finally one DJ started playing them. It's obvious that he only has Doolittle so far I have heard debaser, here comes your man, monkey gone to heaven and gouge away. Pretty cool actually. They are also having a contest to win Coachella tickets and always mention the cure, radiohead and the pixies with here comes your man as background music. |

Posted - 03/27/2004 : 14:12:48 I've never heard a pixies song on the radio but on Radio 1 they mentioned the pixies once in their weird "match a song to an event" sorta thing.it was where is my mind.the exact words were "the pixies, where is my mind"

Posted - 03/26/2004 : 16:21:08 I know I vented about this in another thread, but our "college radio station" here in Brookings, for the past two years, has played nothing but "New Rock." Linkin Park, Godsmack, etc. No college radio music whatsoever. So hearing the Pixies on a college radio station around here, not very likely. However, the more mainstream pop rock station has been playing Gigantic and Where is My Mind, and I'm sure others, which is very cool of them. At least somebody's playing it, right?

Posted - 03/26/2004 : 05:10:30 Okay, digital tv, not radio, but VH2 in the UK have had the Monkey video on their playlist for the past couple of weeks. I can only imagine that the level of Pixies tracks being played everywhere is going to rapidly increase between now and the summer. Playing their music a lot on tv and radio - Yay, announcing secret gigs when they're not supposed to - Nay. |

Posted - 03/25/2004 : 18:59:13 I haven't heard the Pixies on mainstream radio in Minneapolis, but when I lived in Denver one of the stations played them. Of course on corporate radio the only songs you are likely to ever hear are Monkey Gone to Heaven or more likely, Here Comes Your Man. I wish that mainstream radio stations had the juevos to play songs outside of these two, but they don't. The real question is, do we want them to?
On one hand, many of us want everyone in the world to learn about the Pixies, and embrace them for the musical magicians they are. On the other hand, if everyone does jump on this bandwagon, then concerts will be filled with thousands of people who have only ever heard Here Comes Your Man.
The "current" first show of the tour (in Minneapolis) is being promoted by Clear Channel. I'm sure most everyone knows that Clear Channel is the largest radio supercorporation in the known universe. The show was announced on a Clear Channel radio station, which explains how it sold out in 4 minutes, with almost NO notice, in the middle of the day, on a Thursday. Result? Very few people on this website (read: the biggest fans) got tickets. Who got most of the tickets? Scalpers? People who vaugely remember who the Pixies are? Who knows, maybe other fans.
The point is, the other warm-up shows are going to be filled with hardcore fans who have been waiting for this to happen for years. They knew it was coming without radio promotion or print advertising. The Minneapolis show could be the same, or it could be filled with, as one poster put it, "a bunch of Dave Matthews fans in backwards baseball hats."
So, yay or nay? I really don't know.
