Look at that thread on the Coachella message forum...I nearly pooed myself reading it. Those of you who are too lazy..here are some select quotes...
This one was posted by someone named "Interpolitik" (Wow...he already seems smart, eh?) Don't get mad because your almost middle-aged. The kids know there S#*t these days and on May 1st when this thing goes down, Everyone will see why the Pixies aren't headlining. PS don't patronize Radiohead's brilliance. It's not easy being the best band on the planet and creating two of the greatest rock albums ever. The Pixies Couldnt lick Radiohead's balls. Where's the Pixies new material. Oh yeah, this isn't to support some sick new Pixies record, It's to make some money.
If that isn't enough...here's a quote by "KB" You are wrong about the pixies, THEY CAN LICK RADIOHEADS BALLS! and all the other balls at the festival too. ok so maybe they cant lick all the balls, but thats only because they will be too busy SUCKING!
Wow...such ungrateful fucks...

Posted - 03/25/2004 : 08:16:43 Radio head are really quite good though..I mean, quite amazing. The only reason I rate [ixies more is purely because it appeals more to me...
But I wouldnt say either band are better than the other..

Posted - 03/25/2004 : 01:05:21 Domestiques - always good to find another Franks fan!! I saw Radiohead support them in Brighton, the East Wing of the Brighton Centre I think. I saw them about 8 times - never had so much fun at a gig. It was probably the orange trousers that did it. |

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 16:08:59 Radiohead is not brilliant, they just stand out as being less awful than most of the other bands that are recording today. The Pixies are brilliant. Thats all. |

Well, you should look into that. That's biologically unlikely, and sounds unhealthy. On the subject of TMBG cover bands, though, TMBG once pretended they were a cover band and opened for themselves. They called themselves "Sapphire Bullets." Is that what you're thinking of, perhaps?

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 09:56:33 I saw Radiohead at First Ave. in Minneapolis, 1996. They were pretty good, but I don't recall it being in my top 5 concerts. Looking back, it's nice to have seen them in a small venue.

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 09:05:43 I'm not a huge Radiohead fan (although OK Computer is in my opinion a classic). I saw them a couple of months ago in The Point theatre in Dublin (probably my least favourite place to see a band) and they were seriously seriously good. Shit hot, even.
I'd agree that some of their fans are dicks though, but so what. Happens to the best of them. |

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 08:23:15 was it somewhere like the astoria, I saw the franks about 15 times during the 90's and would go and see them today if the chance presented itself.

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 02:51:06 I saw Radiohead support the Frank and Walters! Me and my mates weren't impressed. The F&Ws though - now they WERE a good band live. Now if they supported the Pixies at Brixton...
Still, these bands have to start somewhere, although Radiohead didn't quite create the stir on that tour that the Pixies did with the Throwing Muses eons ago. |

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 02:45:55 I did see Radiohead at Redrocks in Colorado, and I can comfortably say that it was one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen/heard. That venue lends itself nicely to bands. And I'm rather fond of the noises Thom makes when he sings. He's also very intriguing to watch when he sings/dances. Also, please pardon the type-o's in my last post.

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 22:00:57 radiohead are one of those bands where they just decided that theyy should play stadiums, this isnt based on sales or anything, how do you go from supporting the frank and walters to dragging a big tent around the country to playing enormodomes, all on peoples percieved idea of what is good, its all emporers new clothes, but mr yorke, you hath no tunes!

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 21:55:43 There's a good chance I'm confusing Lincoln with another band. I know a TMBG cover band has opened up for them at some point. Maybe I'm blowing smoke out my ass. I'll look into it. I know it's not Cub that I'm thinking of. TMBG actually put the Cub version of NYC on the Gigantic DVD, which was cool. And that's right, Dans are from Lincoln.
And as far as the whole Pixies only playing for money thing.... Yeah, if Radiohead were playing for free, then they would have a leg to stand on. Think about it this way: Why does Radiohead play large arenas and stadiums where the sound quality is shit and the majority of the audience needs binoculars? It's not because the sound is great, cause it rarely is. Why don't they just play several shows at a smaller venue where they can do the music justice? Because they get paid so much more at the larger venues and festivals. It's partly due to time restraints, but they're also doing it for the money. And have you seen how much excess merchandise they have for sale? There's way more than the usual CD's and tshirts. I can't even figure out what some of it is, but they're making good money off of it. I'm not smack talking Radiohead at all. I'm just pointing out sever hypocracy. If the Pixies were only concerned about money, they wouldn't bother with a warm up tour, would they?

Maybe if Radiohead were playing for free, they'd have a point. I doubt they are, though.
I'm not really that familiar with Radiohead, but what I've heard, while pretty good, doesn't really strike me as brilliant, like some people tend to claim it is. I've somehow gotten the idea that Radiohead is one of those bands you're supposed to pretend you like even if you don't, because they're obviously more artful and intelligent than normal humans can imagine. I'm not dissing Radiohead here, mind you, just sharing the impression I get from music critics and the like. Of course, it generally takes less time for me to appreciate an upbeat song, and Radiohead seems to mostly play downers, so they're kind of at a disadvantage in that respect.

Lincoln was a TMBG cover band? I've never heard of that. I have their album, and it's all originals. I haven't heard of their playing any TMBG covers, but it's certainly possible they did. The guitarist and bass player from Lincoln are now in TMBG's regular backup band, by the way.
I'm pretty sure OKGo played a TMBG cover ("Kiss Me, Son Of God," I think) when they opened for TMBG, and I'm sure there are other examples as well. Another band that opened for TMBG was Cub, and TMBG covered THEIR song "New York City" on the Factory Showroom album. This song is a regular part of TMBG's show, so I think Cub was requested not to play it in their set, but I think they might have once or twice.

So what? think of it as a kind of tip-of-the-hat from one musician to a band he likes. I remember seeing FB&C in DC a few years ago, w/ the Bennies opening. The Bennies covered Wave of Mutilation. I didn't think it was that weird. It was pretty cool actually.

Posted - 03/22/2004 : 15:14:48 i went to one of the "deck the hall balls" in seattle many moons ago and remember thom york playing an acoustic set much like frank has been known to do, i remember him playing a jesus and mary chain song(i can't remember if it was head on, but it is a possibility) and i was thinking "are you supposed to play a cover song when the band you are covering is coming on later?" anyways, j & m chain came on and didn't even mention the cover! this isn't even really on topic but wouldn't it be funny if he did play "head on" but he thought he was covering the pixies? then it would turn out the jesus and mary chain are the most influential band of all time......

Posted - 03/22/2004 : 12:25:00 Well, personally I was never as impressed with Radiohead as I was with the Pixies and the last time I checked Radiohead never was the type of band that 'inspired' a huge following of bands...
But one thing that bothers me... Why is everyone making a big deal over them wanting to 'do it for the money'? Wouldn't mind some money myself...
And that last message you posted was just idiotic... Sounds like they haven't even heard their albums or at least not in a long time...I can't see anyone saying that stuff after listening to the Pixies! But that is my extremely biased opinion.

Poor kids, I thought. They might be older than me, but they're still poor kids. Best of luck to 'em, though. Maybe they'll wise up.
