With my excitement about the upcoming concert, many people at work have been asking me about the Pixies. Several have asked me to bring in a CD so that they can find out what the band is all about. I still have no idea how to even describe the type of music they play, particularly since each of their album had a very different feel to it (any suggestions there?), so I'm trying to think of 15 songs to put together on a CD for them to sample.

Anyhow, this got me wondering what 15 songs (B-sides included) people would choose to put on a CD to give people an idea of the range and the best of the Pixies' repertoire.

The 15 that I'm considering at present (sorted by album, but if anyone wants to list the specific order they'd pick, go right ahead):

1. Bone Machine
2. River Euphrates
3. Where Is My Mind
4. Caribou
5. Vamos
6. Debaser
7. Here Comes Your Man
8. Monkey Gone To Heaven
9. Hey
10. Is She Weird
11. Velouria
12. Stormy Weather
13. U-Mass
14. Subbacultcha
15. Motorway To Roswell

I had to leave a lot of my personal favourites off, but I think that would be a pretty good introduction to the Pixies.

i have a bad habit of forcing friends to listen to the music i like and when they don't jump up and down i stop the tunes and try something else, it's really annoying when someone forces you to listen to something then one minute in they say something like "aren't they the fuckin' best ever?" you just have to offer them a mixed tape and if they like it they like it.

subversion works, put the pixies on as background music and 9 times out of 10 a new listener will be like "what are we listening to? this is kinda cool!" and then you say "i can make you a tape if you'd like?" then there's one more pixies fan and the world is a better place. i always include crackity jones even though it's not even one of my favorites - just a real likable song.

Yes, I certainly would. Why wouldn't I? I think in some ways that song really does summarise the Pixies (don't hurt me please I'm only small...)

So you'd use a Pixies parody on a collection summarizing the Pixies?

So really this is going to turn into a list of my favourite Pixies songs, but I've not got much else to do right now, so here we go.......

1) Cactus
2) Vamos
3) Tony's theme
4) Levitate me
5) Caribou
6) Subbaculture
7) Hang wire (not really because it 'summarises' them, but because I like it...)
8) Hey
9) Mr Grieves
10)Weird at my school
11) Chris Morris - Motherbanger (I think it's necessaryto see the funny side, too)
12) Down to the Well (the bbc one)
13) Is she weird?
14) Gigantic
15) Where is my mind? (live, dunno where, but it's pretty...)

Hmmmmmmmm I'm doubting myself considerably....

Impossible to make a choose in a band which all its records are Greatest Hits.

I think the best way to get people interested in a band or artist is to throw (not literally!) an album on casually, and see their reaction. In the end, it's up to them if they'll like it or not.

But if I HAD to turn someone on to the Pixies, I'd play Surfer Rosa, Trompe le Monde or At the B.B.C..

Why do people hate Stormy Weather?! I love that song!

Oh, and I second that you must include Gouge Away & All Over The World.

Stormy Weather sounds great live tho, they used to speed up more after the little intro live much more then they did on Bossanova which made it sound that much better.

my word of advice is to put Bone Machine further down the list cos it might scare off, and start with like Velouria or Holiday Song..and for the love of god get rid of Stormy Weather!

I made this mix for a friend, trying not to be typical, to test if they could get into the pixies from a slightly skewed 101 course. I guess you'd call it an "album-tracks" compilation, latter-work heavy.

Stormy Weather
Head On
I Bleed
No. 13
Trompe le Monde
Havalina
Bailey's Walk
Alec Eiffel
I've Been Tired
The Happening
La La Love You
Blown Away
All Over the World
Mr. Grieves
Silver
Motorway to Roswell
Navajo Know
Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)

Quirky as hell, if you wanted to go a different route. Needless to say, my friend is now devout.

i agree. i've been tired would sum up the pixies sound/ideas.

if you just wanted to make a compilation that would turn friends into pixies fans, you should use nimrod's son, gigantic (from the ep), #13 baby, wave of mutilation and stuff like that.

I don't think you can summarize the Pixies without "I've Been Tired"! It's so raw and sort of '''defines''' the entire sound of COP and SR. IMO.

I just put together a Pixies mix for a few friends. Out of laziness I almost just copied the track list of the upcoming best of but instead I tried to give them what I think is the best or my favs. It's not 15 songs though. It ended up being 28 songs. Here they are:

Debaser
Cecilia Ann
Trompe le Monde
River Euphrates
Planet of Sound
Something Against You
Wave of Mutilation
Velouria
Alec Eiffel
Broken Face
Allison
The Holiday Song
Gigantic
Here Comes Your Man
Head On
Where Is My Mind?
Monkey Gone to Heaven
All over the World
Palace of the Brine
Letter to Memphis
Mr. Grieves
Dig for Fire
Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons
Hang Wire
Havalina
Motorway to Roswell
Winterlong
Gouge Away

you need Gouge Away, No. 13 and All Over the World in there somewhere. I'd take out 8. and 14. at least for the dated sounds.
