I don't care if I, or any new or other Pixies fan ever hears Monkey Gone To Heaven ever again. |

Wave of Mutilation
Artist: The Pixies
(4AD/InterGlobal)
Reviewer: CHUA CHERN TOONG
Any self-respecting alt-music fan would place The Pixies at or near the top of their all-time-favourite-act list.
Proud flag-bearers of the late-80s punk underground, The Pixies may have enjoyed virtually zero commercial viability in their heyday, but they managed to gain the overwhelming respect and adoration of millions of fans in the know, including one Kurt Cobain.
Although The Pixies may have lasted a mere four years, the impact they left behind is almost incalculable – bands as diverse as Radiohead, Weezer, Nirvana and The Flaming Lips, all highly regarded luminaries of late 20th and early 21st century rock music, count The Pixies as their chief influence bar none.
What made The Pixies so iconic was their simple yet compelling musical sensibility: infectiously simple and melodic hooks laid atop dangerously jagged and brutal guitar riffs, and underpinned by a granite- solid drum foundation.
Add frontman Black Francis’s decidedly bizarre stream-of-consciousness lyrics about aliens, sexual perversity and the shadowy side of the human psyche to the mix, and you get one of the most innovative acts of the rock era.
The main alt-rock flavours of the 90s and early 2000s – Brit-pop, grunge, shoegaze and emo-rock – all owe their origins in some way or another to the aesthetic that The Pixies pioneered. For example, The Pixies’ trademark stop-start and loud-soft dynamics comprised the basic blueprint from which the grunge movement worked.
And now, to herald the recent reformation of The Pixies (after a protracted absence of more than a decade), notoriously adventurous record label 4AD – just about the only company that dared to sign them on in 1987 – has decided to grace the market with the release of this splendid, packed-to-the-brim single-disc collection that highlights the finest moments of the band.
However, Wave of Mutilation doesn’t pretend to be anything but a reasonably comprehensive introduction to neophytes: Pixies diehards who own everything by the band will not be served by it in any way.
This compendium is strictly for the uninitiated (and unsuspecting), who will be pleasantly disturbed by the embarrassment of riches collected here.
Wave of Mutilation is presented in a logical chronological order, so as to impart some sense of continuity to the proceedings.
The Pixies’ birth pangs are detailed in the cuts from the 1987 EP Come On Pilgrim, which yields the ferocious The Holiday Song, the Latin-pop pastiche Nimrod’s Son (with one of the most disturbing lyrics in the band’s oeuvre), and the grinding, tension-filled Caribou.
The band’s debut album from 1988, Surfer Rosa, has often been cited as one of the definitive college- rock albums of the 80s, as proven by the abrasive Gigantic, the guitar blockbuster Vamos, the spine-chilling, starkly haunting Where Is My Mind, and the pummelling punk of Broken Face.
Doolittle from 1989 had The Pixies reining in the musical polarity of the preceding Surfer Rosa to make way for a tighter, more focused direction.
The results are truly wondrous to behold: from the widescreen, surf-rock influenced Wave of Mutilation and the warped acoustic-based funk of Hey, to the epic-sized, pop hook-filled Monkey Gone to Heaven and the angular, mid-tempo guitar-rocker Here Comes Your Man, it’s no wonder Doolittle has been hailed as The Pixies’ one true magnum opus.
Bossanova from 1990 has a noticeable sci-fi vibe to it, with most of the songs touching on subject matters like UFO sightings, alien abductions, and Area 51 happenings. Tunes canvassed here include the off-the-wall theremin-propelled Velouria, the twisted Talking Heads tribute Dig for Fire, and the shifting tempoed, almost freeform Allison.
By the time of 1991’s swansong, Trompe Le Monde, The Pixies had become a semi-defunct concern (with bassist Kim Deal gone for good), but as numbers like the synth-based Alec Eiffel, the cynical U- Mass and the harsh punk energy of Planet of Sound demonstrated, they were far from being a spent force, not just yet. And it was soon after that the band decided to call it a day, at least until early this year.
So even if Wave of Mutilation is regarded as somewhat superfluous by Pixies diehards, it is still a more than functional overview and an essential testament to what made The Pixies so endearing and unforgettable.
Chart-pop slaves will find the boldly adventurous and challenging music here jarring at first listen: but if they give themselves a chance, they’ll find that there’s a heap of veritable gems to be discovered.
This is effectively the best Pixies 101 module there ever could be, a consistently top-rate collection from one of the best alt-rock bands ever.

this artwork is for a promo that was released during the DTTP times...PIX5 i think it is - i've got it at home - 20000km away. it just had 1 track from each of the studio albums, but oddly some different to what were on DTTP. i have seen it go for silly money non ebay.
regarding the various versions of DTTP - as far as i remember, the US version has always been the double cd jewel cd version. the initial run of UK ones were in the fancy box with both cd's and the writing illegible because of the gold paint. i believe there was initially sposed to be 9000 of those, but once they realised the paint cock-up they never released the entire run (but don't quote me on that). then the UK version slipped back to the single cd version that you see round now. lotsa info http://membres.lycos.fr/alec/albums.html#dttp

nope, it's a lot brighter than that - hopefully there'll be images up soon, but it is still being worked on...!
as far as all the Death to the Pixies formats, to my knowledge there were quite a few - UK wise, http://quimby.gnus.org/html/title/de.html#deathtothepixies is v. helpful - the ones ending in GT are the golden ticket versions with two extra tracks at the end - and very rare |

Posted - 02/26/2004 : 07:45:19 for this Best Of, it's 4ad all over the world (sorry, couldn't resist the pun) as the rights reverted back to us in the US last year (when all the catalogue was reissued by 4ad) - any new album is unlikely to be on 4ad, as only Kim is still signed... |
benji |
Posted - 02/26/2004 : 06:52:06 i think they'd get to pick whoever they wanted as they're currently not signed to anyone - only their back catalogue is.

Posted - 02/26/2004 : 06:49:48 So, say the Pixies record a new album, even for this new Best Of, who would be or is the US distributor then? SpinArt? Or is it just 4AD all around this time? |
jo |
Posted - 02/26/2004 : 00:30:48 the double is just the old Elektra stock - I'm guessing it'll be easy to find for a while, but no more is being made (as Elektra don't have the rights) |

Posted - 02/25/2004 : 14:02:22 We still have double DTTP floating around the US. I have seen them recently. I had only actually bought mine about 4 years ago. |
jo |
Posted - 02/25/2004 : 10:59:49 it was a limited double in the UK at the start, and has since been manufactured as a single |

Posted - 02/25/2004 : 08:06:55 was it always a double in the US? Got mine in the UK as a double which I thought was limited with a free live cd.

you wouldn't, and realistically, this is for people who didn't realise Death to the Pixies was a Best Of (we're about to delete it, I think).
Thanks for the word on this, I guess those of us who don't have Death to the Pixies should pick it up soon, before it disappears!

Was funny because the first time i saw it, i was round at my brothers, and we were talking about the pixies, and he put on the cd, and then...2 seconds later the ad comes on...and we're like, what the hell? is that your cd playing?! |

Posted - 02/24/2004 : 09:19:26 you wouldn't, and realistically, this is for people who didn't realise Death to the Pixies was a Best Of (we're about to delete it, I think).
It exists more for new fans - there's always people discovering the Pixies - I mean, there's someone here, young enough to have not been around when they were, but aware of 'Tame' and 'Where Is My Mind' because of the Sminoff ad and the Fight Club.
It's those people we're selling this to - anyone else who gets it is just getting it for completions' sake... plus DTTP was available in the US as a double cd, whereas we've had it as a single for most of the world for the last god knows how long. So it made things easier with the DVD, to do a brand new Best Of. The artwork is looking damn good as well..! |
