Ok... This is the RED HOT TOPIC I've been asked for...
Joey is a historical genius in terms of guitar craft but, I would like to understand if there is a reason why, since Head Carrier, the way he plays his instrument sounds VERY outrageously limited and mechanical.
Most of his solos on newest songs consist in a repetition of a short melody with just a different note at the end of the second or third bar. Almost no syncopes. Most of the long notes that made his sound on previous works SO special are now replaced by a sort of mandolin sound... In terms of production, it seems that Joey Santiago is the least of Dalgety's worries.
And this is, to me, the main musical issue with the latest albums by Pixies...
The question is:
Is Joey okay?
(sounds like a good title for a song)
What's your point of view?

Yeah, you never want to be able to predict what's coming next in a Joey guitar solo, and for most of their albums you couldn't, but lately, you kind of can. I can see that. I still think there's probably lots of great stuff we're either not noticing or taking for granted.
I still get annoyed at Dalgety's mix of Longrider which buried Joey's great guitar solo moment in the mix, one that was so celebrated on the Pixies podcast. I didn't even hear it the first dozen times listening to the song. |

That's true. But a energetic song like Oyster Beds also gets that treatment.

I feel like Trompe Le Monde may have been a time and place type thing. They're all younger and have a lot of creative energy. I feel this is unfortunately lacking with a lot of newer Pixies stuff and I think maybe that's why it can stand out with Joey's guitar lines.
Say Frank was writing some twisty out there indie pop/rock (whatever you want to call it) kind of songs I could imagine that would get amplified with how others in the band including Joey's guitar works would react to it. That would be my theory anyway.
As an example also that was mentioned- There's a Moon On is such a generic by the number song IMO I'm not sure any guitar solo would enhance it much honestly. |

In the more dreamy songs, say Daniele Boon and Primrose this works.
I also like all his surfguitars on Vault of Heaven or Los Surfers Muertos and Chicken
But the more rocking songs and especially the solo's sound a bit dull
Like Baal's Back or You're So Impatient or There's a Moon On
Or take Oyster Beds, a song I really love, he does nothing specials until he uses his switch between pick ups.
What I really miss is the interlocking guitar parts, which were all over Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde

For what it's worth, I like the sound of guitars played as mandolins. There's a very good English post-punk band "And Also the Trees" who have incorporated this into their sound for some pretty haunting pastoral "gothic" folk-adjacent sounds over the last couple decades.
Do you have songs in mind? I think it works well in Primrose, which kind of follows the formula I mentioned above. |

Sorry but I don't notice this when I listen to Bossanova or Trompe Le Monde.

I don't think Joey's playing is any particular issue. He has never been a very versatile player tbh and has always had his well of sounds and tricks he returns to. I think it's just easier to notice these things as time goes on. |
