Posted - 06/18/2019 : 15:48:43 In the podcast trailer, BF yell at Tom Dalgety to listen to a Fleetwood Mac album. Has there been a compilation of music that BF likes or recommends? Would love to hear or revisit some new stuff.
Off the top of my head:
Fleetwood Mac (apparently) Burl Ives the infamous Husker Du and Peter Paul and Mary The Fall Big Black |

Posted - 07/10/2019 : 16:39:46 Can't believe I'm just remembering this. At one point he posted Charles Mingus's "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", saying it had (something to this effect) "riffs so fat you could sit on them"
That led me to discovering that record, which I think might be my favorite record of all time. |

Posted - 06/26/2019 : 05:21:07 This is one interview where he discusses Nirvana:
"What did you think the first time you heard Nirvana?" Tim Havelock, Blackpool I don’t know if it was the first time I heard them, but it was the first time it was discussed to my face. It was on the tourbus, and it was, of all people, Kim Deal, who was rockin’ out, and she was like, “You heard this new Nirvana record? It’s really good.” She was really impressed. So my reaction was to try very hard not to be. It wasn’t Nirvana’s fault. If someone becomes very hip or popular, I tend to fight against that grain. If there’s one person in the world who isn’t going to hear a Pixies influence on Nirvana, that person is going to be me. I’m too involved in it myself to hear it in other places. He's so brilliant in his interviews even. He says he'd like to make a new Pixies album, but there are some band members who are opposed to it, but he's not going to make a big deal out of it.
Ah, we get it, thank you.
He actually uses the phrase "big deal" at several key points in the interview.
Any way, great read.

Posted - 06/24/2019 : 19:51:50 I always got the impression he's very good at compartmentalising stuff, he can put things like the Breeders in a box and just ignore it so he doesn't have to have an opinion. Kind of hard to argue with "haven't heard it" in interviews.
Not being a fan of Nirvana makes perfect sense. |

I remember him saying in multiple interviews that he was not familiar with Kim’s music. At least he’s ignoring her band. I don’t remember where I heard or read that. (For the Nirvana thing, I heard it in some old Skype interview of Black and his wife made by a fan. it’s on Youtube)

Had no idea there was a pre-Pavement Malkmus band. On the basis of that article, I don't think the interviewer was a massive fan either! |

Posted - 06/21/2019 : 08:07:04 Some others I've listened to over the years mentioned by FB, Mark Mulcahy, Herman Brood, Mission of Burma, X, Suicide, Dave Van Ronk, Elliott Smith, Violent Femmes.
I remember back in the late 90s he chose an hour of music videos for MTV2, he had The Specials, Moby (covering Mission of Burma), Talk Talk among some others.
Have thought of a few more;
Love and Rockets Del Shannon Donovan Doug Sahm / Texas Tornados The Minutemen Pere Ubu

Posted - 06/20/2019 : 14:26:57 FB is obviously a really enthusiastic fan of glam rock. I mean, it’s obvious just to listen to his music, but he also references it a lot (Bowie connection, the P I X I E S chant in Cactus is a T. Rex reference, played a Roxy Music cover, wanna be a singer like Lou Reed, etc etc etc). And if I remember right hes a fan of Minor Threat, The Birthday Party and Nina Simone. Oh and he wrote a song about Joe Meek so I assume he likes him too.
I remember some cool picks from other Pixies too.... Joey really likes jazz (again, it’s pretty obvious from the way he plays) and is also a big glam fan. Krautrock too. Dave likes Rush. Paz is apparently a big fan of Scott Walker and a post she made on Instagram put me on to a cute band she’s friends with called the Pesos. Kim Deal likes DEVO and Brainiac because Ohio.
----------------------- Q: Where do Pixies keep their instruments when they're not playing? A: Debasement. |

Great idea for a thread. I've become a fan of numerous singers and bands because of BF.
Erik Satie R. Stevie Moore (wonder if they ever did that album together) Warren Zevon Angst The Cars Jonathan Richman Leonard Cohen

Posted - 06/19/2019 : 08:29:40 They make total sense to me but they also sound like uniquely Frank songs, which I think is what a real great artist does. It's like I hear the 10% Dylan but then the 90% of it is all Frank to me.

Frank said in an old interview found on youtube that Jumping Beans was him trying to do John Linnell (they might be giants) and Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes), one of my favorite clips ever.
Here's what Oddballs says:
"Pray a Little Faster" (trying to be Dylan) "Oddball" (trying to be Stones) "Village of the Sun" (trying to be Springsteen AND Dylan) "Baby, That's Art" (trying to be Bowie) "At the End of the World" (trying to be Bowie) "Can I Get a Witness" (trying to be Dylan) "Announcement" (trying to be Daltrey) "Hate Me" (trying to be Strummer) "Re-make/Re-model" (trying to be Sahm) "Everybody Got the Beat" (trying to be Strummer) "Jumping Beans" (trying to be Lou) "Just a Little" (trying to be me) "You Never Heard About Me" (trying to be Strummer) "Man of Steel" (trying to be me)
I feel like I remember him saying somewhere that he was into the femmes. My first copy of Surfer Rosa back in 90 had VF on the B side.
Have you ever gone through that Oddballs annotation and heard those influences? A lot of them make sense to me. |

Posted - 06/19/2019 : 06:12:55 They Might Be Giants. I remember him saying how he loved their album 'Flood'.
The Good, The Bad and The Queen and their self-titled debut.
I remember him praising a new-ish band (at the time anyway), something that he almost never does. The band was TV On The Radio. |
