Posted - 04/09/2018 : 07:06:54 Great info Jake, thanks for sharing that all here.
So the music for Bagboy came from these demos, as did Um Chagga Lagga. i wonder if "Women of War" came from this too, sounds like the ideas of women and war could fit in with Soldier Boy's story. |

Posted - 04/09/2018 : 02:41:06 Thank you Jake. That was handy work. So I'm still wondering, did these original 10-15 demos surface anywhere? They're doubly interesting now I know they were integral to the genesis of Pixies 2.0.

Posted - 04/08/2018 : 12:22:08 Excellent work Jake. It has prompted me to get my copy of The Good Inn out and read the songs. I did have a German traveller who's visiting me flick through the book earlier and she found it quite humourous. |

The Gun Cotton (The Good Inn) Song Cycle: _____________________________________________________________ The Good Inn - Book - 15/04/2014 http://www.harpercollins.com/9780062220790/the-good-inn/web-sampler Josh Frank: (A few years ago…) Sitting at the Café, [Charles] began to tell me about how he had been struggling to find the right way to bring new Pixies material into the world after it had been absent for so long. He wanted to create something musically that was completely different and new. He felt that if a filmmaker would come along and ask his band to do a soundtrack for a cool movie, that might be the answer. Josh Frank: He was inspired by a film he’d heard about called ‘La bonne auberge’ (The Good Inn). Set in 1907, it had the eagerest of plots: a soldier goes into an inn and meets the daughter of the innkeeper and they have a lot of sex. Charles had become fascinated by the idea of filling in the blanks to the soldier’s back story, and in an early attempt to find new Pixie-ish inspiration he had even recorded a few demos for songs pertaining to the story, describing it as a sort of a soundtrack “song cycle” about a character named simply Soldier Boy.
Josh Frank: Charles did end end up writing amazing new Pixies material. Released in parts over 2013 and 2014, a few of the songs’ hooks were actually repurposed from instrumentals from the original recording sessions for the Good Inn demo that Charles, Joey and David created together. Seven of the Good Inn Demo Songs lyrics were used as inspiration for this book and are “musical scene centrepieces” in the narrative. _____________________________________________________________ 2) USA Today - Interview - 30/04/2014 http://www.usatoday.com/story/popcandy/2014/04/30/black-francis/8507327/ Black Francis: “…I was doing these demos with the Pixies, but I didn't really have a lot of ideas ready to go. I also had been thinking a lot about getting the band involved in a movie. … so I created a story in my head…”
Interviewer: How far did you get into the song cycle? Black Francis: “I probably did 10 or 15 songs. Some of them just remained music, some of them had lyrics, I recorded some. But it got put on the back burner. I sort of forgot about them until I got together with Josh.” Interviewer: Does any of the music from the Good Inn sessions pop up on Indie Cindy, the new Pixies record? Black Francis: “On one song, just the music: Bagboy.” _____________________________________________________________
3) Rock Book Show - Interview - 30/04/2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkJSV-I69-I (~ 16m+) Josh Frank: G Interviewer: I’m kind of curious why Soldier Boy, why you left that as his name and didn’t give him a name? Josh Frank: Well, it’s because the main source material I had to begin with was Charles’s - these demos that he did, that Black Francis did with Joey and David Lovering before they started recording their new EP stuff. You know it was a way of sort of putting their toe in the water and sorta feeling out trying to play again and Charles thought it’d be cool to have sorta something that was enclosed and was sorta, you know, a song cycle, a world that was controllable. So he had this idea for a film and he used that story to create this song cycle that they would make music to, to get started playing music again as a band, which they hadn’t done in so long. So after our first meeting about the idea he sent me those demos, there was like 15 of them you know. I remember the file was called ‘Pixes’ P-I-X-E-S because the three of them had done it without Kim [Deal] on it and in the email I remember he said you know, “If we ever finish these I’ll add the other ‘I’ in or something like, I don’t know” - It was cute. They were being very playful about it and very relaxed… But these songs were great and the lyrics were really what - And that’s why I had to have the lyrics in the book, I had to make these songs numbers, ‘cause that was really the initial spark that lit this whole project, was the lyrics to these demos. The songs referred to this character soldier boy and in the first meeting we had what he said to me was “I have this idea for this story, It’s about this character called Soldier Boy. So he called him Soldier Boy and I liked that, I thought that was kind of neat, especially because it really worked for the whole idea of this lost, silent, pornographic film of who we don’t know anything about or about the people in it.
Josh Frank: ~2m40s I think _____________________________________________________________ 4) Radio.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdflNjlHc2w Interviewer: Can you tell us about the graphic novel you’re working on? Black Francis: “Oh-ah, there’s a Pixies connection actually. The idea was really born out of a demo session that Joey and I and David did together about four years ago in Los Angeles. I wanted to be able to write a lot of songs quickly, so we would meet in the evening at Joey’s or whatever, Joey’s Studio and during the day I would be writing some stuff, I actually rented a piano and everything. So I had this kind of song cycle idea, like a kind of movie in my head, a movie idea you know and that’s what was kind of informing some of the songs. Anyway fast forward a couple of years from that time period, I had been involved in this movie script based on those ideas. This graphic novel that is coming out is kind of a snapshot of those movie ideas as they were when the graphic novel was put together.”
UM CHAGGA LAGGA: Black Francis: This song originates from the so called “Gun Cotton" song cycle, a collection of songs and ideas for a film being written with Josh Frank. |

Posted - 04/07/2018 : 04:02:08 Nevermind, I've reminded myself.
Do we know how many if any of these demos ended up as Head Carrier tracks? Um Chagga Lagga sounds like it could've been from this French-themed batch of songs. |
