I'm new to high-definition audio, I've got some tools,
I bought a few blu-ray audio discs. Most of these blu-ray
discs have a PCM 24/96 or 24/192 track. Minotaur has a
DTS-HD Master Audio track, which shows up as 48khz.
If you look at the press releases and the website
http://www.pixiesmusic.com/minotaur/
it says, a little ambiguously, "Blu-ray audio mastered
for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/192"
So, is that DTS-HD MA track 24/192? Or does that sentence
really mean that only the master was 24/196?
I've read that DTS-HD MA is lossy/lossless, where it has a
lossy core and then it has the "make-up" bits, and it only sends
these leftover bits if the destination can handle it.
When I try to get the audio track, I'm getting 24/48.
Is there a trick to getting 24/192? |

Have you tried phasing different channels, so same frequencies are cancelled out? I tried this with with the Letter to Memphis album version and instrumental version to get the acapella but unfortunately they are different recorings and slightly different speeds

I've run a spectrum analyser on the files and it does seem to be,
there is very litte information above 22khz for the most part. Doolittle
seems to have 48khz and the live album looks like it goes to 24khz.
I think I must have done something wrong. |

I've pulled apart the 5.1 tracks [for TLM] for a quick listen and they
all sound like they are going through a flanger. So each channel is
like a piece of the whole track.
The stereo track does seem to be real 24/192. I don't know if I have
a fequency analysis tool, but the programs I'm using seem happy to
give me lots of bits. If I download Audacity, I'll run some tests. |

OK, recap: - regarding those tracks without guitar that have been dumped from those Guitar Hero type games: the whole Doolitte album is available, plus "Sad Punk" from Trompe (they're all available here: http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/bts/Pixies,_The.htm). That's all and that answers my question.
Blu Ray 5.1 mix merely contains the original mix, plus some reverb on the rear speakers. That's not a proper 5.1 remix. Except for quality, that's pretty useless.

Hey, thanks for clearing that up.
Kind of a shame they didn't deliver a proper mix on the 5.1 versions of the Minotaur box set if those "unmixed" master tapes actually exists.
If you ever find any of your files, i'm hghly interested !

that website (from picking gouge away at random) aren't what I was meaning. i meant the proper album versions with the vocals removed.

hell, using he search function there's a thread from 2010 that I started (no wonder I couldn't remember) that talks about them. Seeing as I uploaded some, I must have copies floating round somewhere.....

Seems like the 5.1 blu ray is only the whole mix on the front speakers with some reverb on the rears... So, no isolated vocals, or instruments...
I wonder where those instrumentals i posted in my previous message came from then...?

There's some instrumentals here for example: http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/bts/Pixies,_The.htm. Some of them were probably ripped of the 5.1 mix as you said. I'd really like to have the whole Pixies discography in this format, just to be able to de-compose all those tracks and discover all the little secrets.
Thanks for the tip, but I'm not really a torrent guy. I'd like to actually buy those records in 5.1 mix (blu ray). Are they only available on the limited (signed) version of the box set ? Or all versions ?

Thank you for this. I think I understand now, the 48khz
is the Core audio and I need better tools to get at the
lossless data.
I wonder if the guy in the stevehoffman.tv thread didn't
get the stream properly, even though he seems to have
used all the right tools.
I wont have much time for this for a while, so it may be
easier to find the work already done!
I'll try to remember to look into the 5.1 tracks the next
time I have the boxset out. |

you can even download the 192 kHz, 5.1 channel collection which is a mere 18.6GB!
there was some instrumental versions floating round which i believe were "made" by using these 5.1 rips.
can't find them on my hard drive, so maybe they're on youtube....

How's the 5.1 version mixed ? it possible to isolate vocals/guitar/drums on this mix ? Would be great to make backing tracks to play a long.

I don't know how to tell if the word length was also upconverted but, even if they are true 24 bit, I still find it disappointing."
