Posted - 06/01/2014 : 05:43:41 i think the right answer is obviously the Pixies should keep going. nothing on Indie Cindy is an embarrassment or disgraceful or choose your pejorative here. the vast majority is a lot of fun and i love having it. i didn't like a lot of the specifics of its release, but from a writing/performing stand point Frank and the band still have game.
i don't think the Pixies have another straight up classic in them, but that's for a variety of reasons, with only a very small handful of them being directly related to the band. they definitely have an album in them that's better than IC though. |

Posted - 06/01/2014 : 00:46:05 You started the Pixies are fucking sellouts thread. Your opening post was your usual childish attention-seeking. Charles responded in his typical sympathetic style and you did a complete U-turn. You went from spitting bile to sucking c***, to use your expession. I prefer my expression - you pissed your pants like a baby.
I'm reminding you of this to shame you into quitting your crap. You're like the kid who thinks it's clever to knock on someone's door and run away.

Seriously, the "Minotaur" boxset of old albums and ANOTHER friggen reunion tour in 2009 is a joke. With no new material to plug, the Pixies are just taking the piss and taking money off fans so they can play the same old setlist AGAIN. They have it in them to write some decent new material, but as a band they have become irrelevant. PLEASE GIVE UP THIS SERADE WHILE YOU STILL HAVE SOME CREDIBILITY, OR DO THE RIGHT THING AND RECORDING A NEW ALBUM.

next morning...Sorry I dropped out last night. My connection got very slow for some reason.
Anyhow, these are all legitimate comments. And if you are a frustrated fan you can imagine how frustrating it can be to BE in a band. But I suppose these are GOOD problems. As far as playing live is concerned, well, firstly, there IS demand for the live show or we wouldn't be touring. As a mater of fact, I can say that the band and it's reps have not even solicited the shows we are doing at the moment; they called us. Secondly, as a music artist, it is your hard earned right to appear in the market place. We got into this this all on our own, it was not easy, and as most musicians know, for every high paying gig you play there are MANY non paying gigs (IN THE RED GIGS!) in your past AND future.
What seems obvious to an outsider is truthfully much different and more complicated from where I sit. But that's ok. I speculate about others, too. It's fun. It's human to speculate.
I would love to make some comments about the 4AD box set, but the little people are calling...

Thanks for the reply. I guess I see it from your perspective, and am totally grateful that the Pixies continue to perform, and that you as a solo artist or a Catholic continue to release great music year in and year out. I just feel that the Bam Thwok teaser single and the live shows demonstrate you have it in you to release some relevant (possibly great, possibly just ok) music. You guys are at the top of your game at the moment, I feel now is the time to cash in on that to put out an EP or album of new material. There is a certain magic of the 4 of you playing together that cannot be recreated in any of you or the other Pixies solo output (despite much of it being top notch). Anyway, keep up the good work - its like the Pixies are climbing a mountain and some new music (bad or good) would be the summit.

The sad thing is that you think you made a point and said something "logical".
Just because there is forum for discussions doesn't mean there's no such thing as a stupid fucking post.
Like yours above for example. |

There's no point in being tactful... these questions are fucking idiotic.
What's the "logic" here. It seems to be... I don't like the new music. I don't want to hear any more new music they might make. I don't want to see them play the new music live... So they should stop and go away, otherwise I'll have to keep not listening and not going to shows. That's fucking idiotic.
It's really pretty simple. Charles, Joey, and David should make new music and tour if they want to, for as long as they want to. If they're happy with the new music they create, they should keep doing it. If they like touring, they should keep touring. If they are enjoying what they're doing and are having fun, they shouldn't "stop" or "go away".
If you don't like the new music, don't buy it. Don't listen to it. If new music would affect your enjoyment of seeing them live. Don't go.
YOU don't get to decide when they stop or go away. They do. You get to decide when you stop and go away.
Indie Cindy should have no affect on your love for Surfer Rosa, or Doolittle. If it does, there's something very wrong with you.
If they put out another 10 albums or 100 songs and you hate them all. SO WHAT? Don't listen to them. Don't go see them live.
Maybe it's time for YOU to go away.

But whatever my opinion, I would never be so arrogant and moronic to declare they should stop doing something they love and go away because I'm not into it. |

Posted - 05/13/2014 : 02:28:47 They are doing tons of publicity / interviews / special appearances for Indie Cindy. There's not a day without a new interview or mini-concert.
Even at the very peak of their Doolittle fame, I don't think they were that much active (beside touring).
Indie Cindy is definitely a huge project for the band. They worked hard and it must be kind of frustrating for them to know that even some die-hard fans are considering the EPs and the album to be some kind of a joke.
I don't think Frank is insulting the public, or outstaying his welcome or making fun of the audience. That's quite the contrary, IMO.

Posted - 05/13/2014 : 01:04:29 I think they outstayed their welcome by taking 10 years to release a new album after reforming...
But I am happy they are a real band again finally, took too long to happen imho but it is a good thing that their own destiny, legacy and other intangibles bestowed upon them by others are back in their own hands. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 10:12:59 For what it's worth, Indie Cindy entered the UK charts at number 6 last week. The only previous album to beat that was Bossanova (3). In the US it came in at 23, previous best again Bossanova at 70. Of course, chart positions have no bearing on the quality of the music but it's fair to say Pixies are more popular now than they ever were in their 'heyday'.
I really like Paz, and if 'Women of War' is any indication of what comes next the future looks very bright to me. |

What local, NYC, station is playing Pixies? I'd like to hear that, since I'm local.

107.1 'The Peak'. I heard Greens and Blues while driving in my car a few days ago. The DJ mentioned that it was the first new album from the Pixies in 20 years. He sounded like a fan....no mention of the Kim drama. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 05:37:12 They are selling out venues. True, those are not arena sized venues, but few acts can sell out the big venues today. It's a combination of changes in the music industry and the continuing shit economy.
Paz is actually doing quite a good job, her bass playing is much better than Kim's, although Paz's singing voice is not quite as good. I'll bet that most people who are not Pixies fanatics don't even notice.
The new album is actually getting a bit of airplay on the local radio stations (New York City). I can't even remember the last time I heard a Breeders tune on the radio.
First time they broke up, Kim's star shined and the boys fell into obscurity. This time around the boys are getting noticed and Kim has fallen off the radar screen...and her condition will probably be permanent. I think she badly miscalculated. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 05:34:21 Pretty much every music shop I've been in has the CD on their charts shelf. The album is actually pretty good.Joey and Dave have done a lot of interviews every since they first reunited. And as for the 'slipping down the bill' thing, well all I know is that they're playing several festivals this summer with high or top billing. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 04:57:15 Not at all. I think their next release will be highly anticipated, not just by longtime fans but critics as well. They have to up their game and make great music but to me it seems like things are going fine. There is quite a bit if exaggeration in your post, things aren't as bleak as you make them to be. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 02:26:26 They aren't playing smaller venues. Same as always. The festivals are smaller, however and that is show business. Muse used to be headlining festivals as well a couple years ago.
The critics are hammering the album for very obvious reasons. They don't matter at this point. The only time a reviewer matters is before the public are aware of a band. And they are falling further and further into irrelevancy.
None of that should matter to the band. They play moderately sized venues which are usually full, and make good money from the releases as they have no label. They may have peaked in some ways, but why does that matter? They still sound fantastic live. |

Posted - 05/12/2014 : 01:12:37 You are painting a dark picture. Figures seem to show that Indie Cindy sells as well as previous albums in the UK and better in the US. Future releases may either receive better critics and/or provide a hit that would further extend the fanbase (with the risk to alienate a portion of the older fans). This is just the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the band and despite the mixed critics (there are also very positive ones) I think it can only add to the popularity of the band, considering that nothing can alter the greatness of the first albums and new releases bring new fans, simply because it is treated as an important event. I can see it here in France, where daily national newspapers write articles on the band. Basically, the media message is either "you should buy this album because the Pixies are a great band" or "you should not buy this album because the Pixies used to be a great band". Even in negative critics there is an underlying positive one. |
