OK I love Joey, he's one of my favourite guitarists ever but i've been noticing recently that nearly every time I watch a 'new' Pixies video on youtube, his playing seems incredibly sloppy in places with a lot of quite basic and sometimes quite cringeworthy errors..

Has anyone else noticed this and is anyone else surprised? I don't know if it's nerves or lack of practice or some other reason but it seems quite strange to me as I always found his playing in the past very precise and largely faultless.

You really don't notice those fcuk ups live. They sound really good when you actually go to the show. But I still miss KD.

It would have sounded fine if he didn't make a face.

he makes a lot of mistakes. but it's never super detrimental to the band. his aesthetic is purposefully sloppy sounding so most likely don't even notice.

he's a writer, not a player. does that make sense?

He buggers up Monkey straight away (around 9 min mark) here, but who cares? The sheepish expression on his face immediately afterwards is priceless.

I'm not going to compile a collection of all the videos I have noticed him making mistakes on as that wouldn't be a task I would take any pleasure from.. If no one else has noticed anything awry then I guess it's just me over analysing things.

Amateurs becoming legends by playing guitar, that's probably all I love about rock 'n roll.

His compositions are fantastic and yet very simple to play, which is probably the true essence of popular music: songs or music that anyone can sing, or play.

I'll exchange 10 amazing shredders for one Joey Santiago anytime.

I don't mind the 'errors' so much as the way he's introduced wah to the Pixies sound since 2004.

He's always made at least one error per song, nothing new
Always joking about that with friends who think he's one of the best guitarists as a composer, and one who remains 'human' or even amateur when on stage :)

i don't know if i would label his playing as sloppy per se, but he does tend to blow quite a few clams.
i noticed it on this past european tour. i think people admire joey more for his creativity as a player rather than his technical ability.

I noticed one stuff up on an acoustic session, but it was more an exception than the rule. His style is pretty edgy and staccato and sometimes playing a bit ahead of everyone, but not really sloppy.

I'm surprised to read this since I view Pixies as a very rehearsed band on stage, particularly Joey. Aside from Vamos and other moments when he varies his playing from the records it always seemed to me like he just plays the same parts over and over. As an example, I think every time I've heard them play Hey, he's nailed the solo.

Do you have a particular clip or two online that you can point towards? I haven't watched many videos of the recent tour and it could be that I just haven't focused on his playing, but I am surprised to read this.

cheers

I play Death Metal and Punk and I like what he is doing as a musician and entertainer Goldtop in hand he's Pixies guitarist and guitar hero!

Errors, please explain what you mean.

As far as I know he always played like that. We tend to notice this more often probably because we now have tons upon tons of Pixies videos to analyze.

He's still one of my (our ?) favourite guitar hero however. Totally defined the sound of the Pixies, and still does. So let's forgive him !
