Although we are fans and we love the band and their music, I'm sure we have some gripes ie things we don't like about the current tour, etc. I know this is probably futile but let's not turn this into yet another "the new music sucks" thread or another "it's not Pixies without Kim" thread...

So I'll begin... Ever since the band started touring again last Fall I've been checking out the set lists online and watching youtube videos of new songs and old favorites they have "dusted off". And they were really delivering then too. Not only were they playing Bagboy and all 4 songs off EP1 but they also dusted off I've Been Tired, Brick Is Red, I'm Amazed, Tony's Theme, Ana, Havalina, The Sad Punk, Motorway To Roswell and D=RxT. Then they also debuted 3 of the songs that would end up on EP2 months before their release, Silver Snail (which still hasn't been released) and a new cover, Big New Prinz. However, in 2014, they've only added Snakes off EP2 and there have no new songs debuted or even old songs brought out of retirement... What gives, Pixies? I'm not saying I would ever expect these old songs to replace the favorites everyone wants to hear in concert but it would be nice to sprinkle in one or two at every show. They were rehearsing Oh My Golly, Dig For Fire and Build High. There were lighting set-ups for The Happening, All Over the World,Palace of the Brine, Letter to Memphis, Rock A My Soul, Tromp Le Monde shown online. What happened to playing those songs too? I can kind of understand why they may have decided not to play songs before releasing them anymore (they probably heard too much bitching from fans about "Why doesn't Magdalena sound more like it does live?", etc.). Now the North American tour is almost over...

Anyhow, that's my gripe. I know it's just me being a spoiled fan but I guess I was hoping to hear a lot more Bossanova and TLM songs now that KD is gone... *Sigh*

Not on all choruses
Live, BF is adding lower harmonies only around the end of the song, it brings some much needed variety in an otherwise repetitive piece. The recorded version sounds more 'noble' to me than the first 2013 performances heard, but I agree it could be improved by rerecording, and at the very least remastering. Violin could also fit in nicely.

i personally find they've always added enough new things to their "bunch of songs they can pick from" each time i've seen them since 2004. i think you're in fact a bit spoiled. not everyone - probably only very few - follow the different tours closely online.

for the band, it's just economics, i guess: they're not tired of the current songs yet, and 99% of the people who come to see them on the north american tour haven't seen/heard them on the european tour. so they can easily continue with the same bunch of songs for this tour, as they're still fresh for most of the audience.
(they're not trying to please the hypothetical nutcase who goes to every show on every tour, and wants to see something different after a couple of weeks.)

also note that the sad punk has been on their setlist before. it wasn't added last fall. (they were also playing it when i saw them back in 2005 and 2010, for example.)

it's educational

Setlist hasn't changed since the beggining of the tour in september, so I don't think there was any problem with rehearsing Paz.

In fact Paz was probably rehearsed way before KS left. I heard they made bassist auditions back in early 2013. Paz was probably already into the picture at that point.

Maybe the switch to Paz from Kim S at the end of the first tour had an impact, in terms of rehearsal time.

Seems to me they had more rehearsal/practice time before the first leg of the tour than the second. So maybe there just wasn't enough time to perfect all songs, just a thought.

Audiences want a greatest hits show. They want to hear Surfer & Doolittle stuff plus Where is my mind. They don't really care about "newer" tunes or recent EPs...

Must be pretty frustrating for an artist... especially considering the very good quality of EP1 - EP2 tunes. But they're probably used to it. And Frank seems to appreciate the fact to be a cult artist. He's right, there's no reason to rebel about that after all...

I think you love Pixies too much, that's why you're not thinking straight.

About all those songs they haven't performed for 20 years (Trompe, Memphis, Brine,...), Joey answered my question on his alternativenation interview (see related topic).

He said they'd have to learn those songs again (probably means they haven't even rehearsed them). He also said that he's pretty sure that their current setlist is what people wants to hear. So there you go...

My personal opinion: even if Pixiesconcerts looks like simple rock shows, it must be quite complicated to put everything in place (lightnings, mixing, logistics...). They don't seem to have an enormous road crew. So they probably decided at rehearsals which songs were working and which didn't. I think a lot of original late-Pixies songs are not performed live on recent tours because they need a bigger sound (3rd guitar, keyboards,...) to sound good. ex: Trompe Le Monde and Memphis were performed back in he day with Joey's brother on rythm guitar. So, either they don't like the songs, or they are too complicated and not rehearsed for that reason. One thing is clear: they don't think the public wants to hear them. ...and they're probably right. Few Pixies fans actually like those songs (I do like them. I even thing those are their best songs. But I don't represent the majority. Sigh.)

But what "bothers" me the most is that except Silver Snail, there's no new song performed live on this 2014 tour leg. Which makes me wonder what songs will be on the next EP (or if there will ever be a next EP).

PS: those are *small* complaints. I totally pleased with the current tour and the 2 EPs ! And the fact that my favourite band still lives.

I can understand your point about not having the players available to do some of those TLM songs. Although... Motorway To Roswell has prominent keyboards and they play that now.... I think they are underestimating how die hard most Pixies fans are. I would like it if they included one or two obscure cuts every show.

I am pretty sure there will be at least an EP3. We all know how much music Frank produces (an album every 1-2 years for over 20 years now) so I imagine he must be feeling pretty "baked up" (cracking myself up over here thinking about "musical constipation"). We'll probably get another EP or two AND a new album next year. :-)

I concur with Masher on not hearing more old songs that got rehearsed, and not enough surprises / new songs
I'm glad for the acoustic shows though

I wish they would play Big Red. That's a good song.
