Kim once said of Billy, "I want that pill he has--the one that makes him think he's so fucking important."

Yeah, Deal certainly didn't need the reunion financially. 'fool the World' points in the direction that she wanted to help out Lovering and Santiago.

That's what she said in the loudQUIETloud doc. That may have been part of the reason, but I believe it was mostly because she had nothing to do. She was just out of rehab and living with her parents. In addition there were rumors that Charles was going to replace her if she refused. What if she had called Thompson's bluff and he replaced her with Paz Lenchantin, or Melissa Auf der Maur? What if it turned out to be a big success? It would have made Deal nuts.

That U2 tour was probably the final nail in the coffin for the Pixies. At the time the Pixies were getting a lot of attention from industry critics and other music cognoscenti. Bono noticed this and invited the Pixies to be their opening act. I doubt Bono really gave a shit about them, it was really a Machiavellian move on his part. U2 were being criticized for being corporate rock hacks and sell-outs. Inviting a hip alt-rock act was an attempt by Bono to boost his "outsider" cred.

Yeah this is probably true. I am surprised they decided to do it, since NIN and Nirvana both said no. It was pretty obviously a terrible idea at the time. It's like bands opening for Cold Play or Nickelcrap. Their fans are primarily weirdos and who don't like anything else.

Of course, it's not like they weren't at fault. The book portrays them as being a little bit of a pain to market. If they had just made the music videos with some amount of effort, did the interviews, and played the game a little bit there fortunes would have been very different.

Also, Smith really got shafted with Surfer Rosa. Albini probably did a better job than Smith would have done, but it probably would have been adequate enough.

Thompson probably had stars in his eyes when he got the offer, and said yes before he really thought it through. It was obvious to the Pixies, and their management, that accepting the U2 offer was a mistake. The audiences for U2 and the Pixies were probably as different as noon and midnight, with no overlap....fact is that the majority of U2's audience never even heard of the Pixies.

The Pixies were treated poorly by the U2 organization. They were assigned closets and bathrooms as their dressing rooms. They were paid next to nothing. Most of the U2 people didn't even bother to learn the name of the band, it was just "the supporting act".

This rubbed the Pixies band members the wrong way, but Kim was especially peeved. At the time Kim was engaged to some scribbler from Spin Magazine. Her fiance traveled with the Pixies during the U2 tour, and proceeded to write a very nasty piece for Spin Magazine criticizing U2 WHILE THE PIXIES WERE STILL TOURING WITH U2! You can imagine how this put Thompson in an awkward spot with U2. Let's say he was even less happy with Kim than usual.

As for money, you are correct, the Pixies didn't make enough money to live out the rest of their days during their first go around. Since Thompson owned both the name Pixies and the publishing, he got more money than the other 3...another factor that rubbed Kim the wrong way. Interestingly, a year later, Kim's Last Splash album went platinum in 9 months time, outselling all the Pixies albums combined. The the next couple of years, the Breeders were the darlings of MTV and alt-rock festivals. Kim probably netted over a million dollars in the 2 years post Pixies. The only reason that Pixies reformed is because the boys really needed the money. By 2004, Kim's life had dissolved in a drug/alcohol fueled waste. She probably didn't need the money the way the boys did, more than likely she agreed to go along because she had nothing else to do.

I know what you mean, fills in a lot of gaps....... The whole U2 tour was just so messed up. I never realised that so few people saw the band play, due to buying their U2 merchandise. It all seems very wrong, but that's the nature of supporting huge bands!!

Just finished fool the world. Amazing book. I want the unreleased version of HCYM, pre Doolittle. Why haven't more people read that book?

Negative, there is a version recorded by Norton during the River Euphrates sessions that has never been released. Apparently it is severely pop.

Billy says, "I played here in 1994 with the Breeders." He goes on to say, "Look at a picture of Kim Deal from 1995. She was a beautiful woman. You know where this is going?" Then he says, "Look at me now....the same. I was a prince then, and I'm a king now. I'm also a Queen."

BTW, what is HCYM?
