Posted - 04/02/2011 : 06:09:29 I'm sorry if this has been discussed already. But since I can't find anything on it, I thought I'd go to the experts. Some are claiming that a song called "Beyond the Mermaids" is a leaked Pixies track:

I have my doubts when I see it on paper--especially with a title like "Beyond the Mermaids". But I kind of believe it because (a) it really sounds a bit like the Pixies to me and (b) it's actually not a bad song. Experts, please weigh in.

Posted - 04/05/2011 : 03:17:49 Ha! Comments are great! To me, it REALLY does sound like a Pixies track, but Bassanova-era. Which I love! But also, it sounds like a demo and it's obvious why it wouldn't make the cut. Not even as good as a Bossanove-era b-side. |

In my opinion. |

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 11:09:56 I just re-listened and it's still pretty average. Right up my street in terms of genre, but it just doesn't go anywhere. It might as well be ten seconds long. Needs a few effects or some wishy washy vocals, or both, or it needs to be the back end of a more epic 6th track/end of side one.
It does sound very much like the Pixies though, and with their recent history of trying to be enigmatic it could well be a publicity teaser for a new album that they are secretly working on. More likely though it is just some band aspiring to be like them releasing this to get interest in their own band though. Either way I'd still like to hear more from them, whoever it is. |

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 10:26:57 Well, "better than Bam Thwok" means there's improvement! Upward momentum. In any event, nice review of an album that hasn't been released yet--or even recorded for that matter. |

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 10:00:59 It was better than Bum Thwak, but then it's not hard to be better than that is it? I have a high expectation of music, owing to the sheer volume of great music that is coming out nowadays. I would predict if the Pixies did release a new album I'd probably like it, and there would be two really great tracks that for a while I'd say were the best thing they've ever done, but the album as a whole would become tiring and obsolete, a bit like Bluefinger you might say. |

Posted - 04/02/2011 : 06:27:29 Nah, not the Pixies - not that I've had it verified but I really don't think so.
