i find myself listening to this release more than any other these days. maybe it's because it's the most "different." i find myself looking at the doolittle tracklist and thinking "nah, there's got to be something else."

it does have my favorite version of 'is she weird.' i think it's because they highlight that awesome guitar hook at the end.

Yeah, There Goes My Gun is fantastic in the peel version. One of the best Pixies tracks period. Faster, rawer, cooler than the doolittle version. I'm bummed I don't have my Pixies records here, won't be able to hear it in a week almost. (I don't even have a P2P to steal it 'til I'm reunioned with my CD collection)

Well, 'demo-tapey' can mean many things. In good ways, it can represent a real vibe, with endearingly rough edges and an energy that isn't reflected in a more produced version. On the flipside, it can sound unrehearsed, lacking in decent arrangement, and inferior to the finished product.

I love the 'Come on Pilgrim' sound; great reverb and atmosphere, and a very tight band. Some of the BBC sessions sound great, but the latter era tracks sound particularly weak in comparison.
Jose Jones Posted - 06/27/2007 : 21:21:16
demo-tapey is gold when it comes to the pixies. come on pilgrim. the rest of the purple tape.

undoubtedly like a lot of people, i mad emy own cd of the purple tape using COP and "Pixies." i listen to it more than doolittle by far.

I'll go on the record (ARF!) and say I really don't like the BBC Sessions. I dunno why.. it just kinda seems....more..demo tapey or something.

the BBC CD is the one I listen to more than anything else.. I love that CD! If it had the B-side version of River Euphrates, It'd be my favorite Pixies cd.

Caribou (BBC) is my all time fave Pixies song

gotta agree, I think the first Peel session (especially caribou) is the best thing they ever recorded ... both caribou and levitate me are far superior to the come on pilgrim versions and the vocals on hey (especially when he sings 'we're chained') are so much better than on doolittle ... although strangely, I was a bit disappointed when they released them on CD because it doesn't sound as good as my tape recordings from the time ... although I guess that's probably just because it sounds different - through being remastered - and it's not what I'm used to (I played those early recordings to death)

have you heard the BBC versions of Motorway to Roswell and Palace of the Brine, jose?
Jose Jones Posted - 06/16/2007 : 05:31:12
yeah, i love this version of 'dead,' what with joey's nonstop opening hook.

'Letter to Memphis' is played in a different tuning to the album version.

I like this collection, even though it was the last Pixies album I acquired. Incidentally, the first was 'Complete B Sides'.

I only lifted There Goes My Gun and Dead for my ipod. These replies surprised me a bit so I'm playing it again. Could be I need another listen.

BBC got me through a student job in a drive in when I was 18 or so. The only job in retrospect I don't feel bad about. I'm crazy about the version of 'Is she weird'.
martha_promise Posted - 06/14/2007 : 22:25:49
This is the second Pixies album I've ever owned. (Bossanova was the first) It's the album that killed me. Fell in love with all of them backwards after that(sans Trompe Le Monde)

Yeah, I believe the Letter to Memphis is different (& better imo) than the one on Trompe Le Monde.

...well that's the deal, turn your prayer wheel.
pixiestu Posted - 06/14/2007 : 14:56:46
"Rock me Jospeh Alberto Santiago!"

I like the version of There Goes My Gun too, plus Is She Weird. I like the screaming at the end.

Is Letter to Memphis played differently than it is on Trompe Le Monde?

I prefer the version of There Goes My Gun on this. The Doolitle one's a bit bland in comparison.
Carl Posted - 06/14/2007 : 11:20:22
I love it when Joey's guitar comes in on this version of Caribou. It sounds to me like it belongs in a Morricone soundtrack on some grimy 1970's film, or something!

"Aw yeah, that's the good stuff!"
starmekitten Posted - 06/13/2007 : 23:33:07
If I could only own one Pixies album it would be this one. Fact.

Idiot.
Levitated Posted - 06/13/2007 : 19:16:13
Caribou (BBC) is my all time fave Pixies song. It's kinda weird, I first started listening to the Pixies through "BBC" and the bootleg "The B-Side file" (it was long before the "Complete B-Sides" official release)
