For Pixies fans, this is a must. The concert footage from a 1988 UK show has to be one of the greatest concerts recorded. It shows how dedicated Charles, Joey, David and Kim are to their music. Kim looks hypnotized most of the time. Davidfs drumming is close to perfect. Joey looks like hefs afraid of the crowd. Charles is typical Black Frances; Mad at the world and laughing at it. The documentary, Gouge, is great. Not only does it provide you with details about the band, it demonstrates how influential the Pixies are to modern rock. The tour footage is okay. Therefs good spots, but theyfre in the middle of some very boring scenes. Last, the Videos. Pixies are not known for gshowh, and these videos show that. None of them are really worth watching, to be quite honest, but Veloria provides you with a few panty shots of Kim, which isnft too bad (though this is probably one of the worst videos ever). Customer Review: Saw itc and instantly became a Pixies fan! All I knew about the Pixies is that Kurt Cobain loved them and that they greatly influenced his music. Then in 2004 they reunited and I found out they were coming to my country, Slovenia. The tickets were sold out two months before the show. Everyone was excited. Of course, I had to learn more about them! I borrowed some stuff from a friend and heard a few of their ghitsh - Where is My Mind?, Gigantic, Bone Machine, Caribou and Monkey Gone to Heaven. I liked them. 20th June 2004, the day of the concert. Itfs raining. The tickets were sold out, so me and my friends went to stand in front of the Krizanke (ex-)monastery, where they performed. I recognized the five songs Ifd heard before and was happy that I went, even though the weather was bad. A few months later I saw this DVD in a second-hand shop. I didnft even know they had a DVD out. I bought it just to see how these guys look like when performing, since I could hear them live, but not see them. MAN, was I blown away when I saw the concert!! This DVD instantly made me a Pixies fan. Itfs still my favourite music DVD. Four casual looking people: - a bit (now a lot) overweight vocalist/guitarist Frank Black aka Black Francis - a Filipino lead guitarist, Joey Santiago - the nicest woman in rock history, bassist/vocalist Kim Deal - and the drummer, David Lovering totally rocked my socks off (like Jack Black would say). Frank Black shocked me with his vocal (screaming) abilities, giving raw, wild energy to the songs, swinging an acoustic guitar during a song and accidentaly knocking off the microphone, but he also amazed me how he sang the softer, melodic stuff; Joey produced some wildest guitar sounds ever, attacking and shaking the guitar like an animal, rocking the amp, playing with his beer canc; David swinging high with his drumsticks; Kim keeping the groove with the simple bass lines, always smiling, and adding the magic with angel-like background vocalsc WOW! The music is still today after two decades totally unique, very catchy and melodic with both acoustic and heavy guitars and some cool effects. Add some also totally unique and sometimes creepy lyrics by Frank Black and there you have it - the biggest underground band, a cult band, a band that influenced the most influental rock band of the 90fs. The concert alone is well worth the money, but therefs also a lot of other goodies: - the music videos - a nice short documentary about the Pixies with interviews with famous people, including the bandmembers (except Kim) - gon the roadh footage, capturing some cool moments while on tour, including lots of songs on various festivals and other venues. Defintely worth every penny if you like the Pixies, and of course, A MUST for real fans. One more thingc if youfre new to the Pixies, every song gets better and better each time you hear it, and youfll be changing your favourite song quite often. Which is a good thing - you wonft get bored with the Pixies anytime soon.:) |

The one thing that pisses me off in the 'Gouge' documentary is that Mojo hack saying "if you're a real Pixies fan, it's not cool to like the latter two albums" |

I can't rave enough about this dvd. Of all the shows they could have picked to put on it they just happened to pick the very first show I saw them play. At that point I'd only heard two demos; Down To The Well and Rock A My Soul, so my first real listening experience of the songs was live. It changed everything. And if that wasn't enough another new band, Throwing Muses followed them onstage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgTHbKtBAGM (from the same show).
I picked up the Muses' debut, Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa next day (some shopping list!). I feel pretty lucky to have such a great dvd memento of what's still the gig that's meant the most to me over the years.
Gouge is a pretty good doc charting the band's rise and I like the fact that all the guests; Bowie, Harvey, Yorke, Bono etc all look genuinely amazed and delighted when recalling the first time they heard Pixies. It reminds me that when they first appeared in th UK, the initial reaction was incredulity; How can this ordinary looking band be THIS fuckin' spectacularly good!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Gn9TWY5HA

Posted - 08/21/2009 : 17:44:17 I'm watching this right now, and I'm trolling old threads to find a place to rave about Gouge and the fact that this DVD package is rich and full and every part of it is quality.
I'm saving the live show for last. Every last piece of content on this DVD reminds me how this band is loved by a physical part of my body where it seems to take up space. |
