I've heard a lot of noise, so I'm going to the stereo store, to get a white noise maker and turn it up to ten. |

Posted - 04/10/2006 : 18:44:13 Other than the Pixies, I'm a classic/psychedelic rock guy. I grew up listening to bands like Status Quo, Cream, The Who, Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention, etc. I'm not sure you're into that kind of thing, but I'd look into Syd Barrett if you are. He was always my favourite musician (until I discovered Charles, of course).

Posted - 04/09/2006 : 13:05:51 Yeah, I always heard a Pixiesish dynamism in Fugazi's music. Oh, and hi, HF if I haven't already said it!!

Posted - 04/08/2006 : 17:46:50 Obviously, Frank Black solo and Frank Black and the Catholics should be considered. Although slightly different, I reccommend Fugazi to any intelligent Pixies fan. I say this because Fugazi is a very serious band with sharp political views. Their music is some of the most unique hard rock ever written.

One of the first bands I loved was X. I liked how Exene and John Doe shared singing duties. That’s what drew me into the Pixies originally. Hearing Kim's voice at the right moment in a song just felt, well right.

Totally agreed, Thomas.

Other bands I like which have a female sharing the singing duties. The Rentals, Earlimart, Enon, Autolux and the above mentioned Comas and X.

Yeah. Apparently he and David Lowery would often get each other's fan mail.

Posted - 03/24/2006 : 09:25:33 I don't listen to most of these bands, except for the White Stripes and Tom Waits, so I am going to suggest you go out and pick up a Mofro cd. They have two, Blackwater and Lochloosa. They classify themselves as frontporch soul. They sing mostly of the south, don't sound a damn thing like the Pixies, but they are definately worth checking out.

Posted - 03/24/2006 : 05:43:13 There's no band that can rank as high as the Pixies on my list. I still get that weird "omg-this-is-the-height-of-music-I-wanna-smash-everything-in-my-room" feeling whenever I listen to Surfer Rosa. With that being said there do exist a few bands that's almost as good as Pixies:
PAVEMENT Can't believe that no one has mentioned them yet, awsome band with exceptional lyrics. Some people find it a bit hard to get into Stephen Malkmus style of singing/talking but oh well. I'd recommend to start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, since it's probably their most accesible record (not meaning it's boring. Just look at Safe as Milk).
SONIC YOUTH Amazing band, followers of The Velvet Underground, their exploration with in the noise scene has gone far through the years. They have made so many good records but I think you should start off with "Sister", get her, NOW! Shit, they're like 54 now and Thurston Moore still looks like a teenager...
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND This is where it all began, I really don't have to say anything 'bout them so I'm gonna settle with a "Get VU & Nico and White Light/White Heat right now... fuck, get them all"
:)

Posted - 03/24/2006 : 05:19:43 Radiohead definitely. They really arn't anything like Pixies but they have a unique sound, as most great bands have. Being unique, obviously, there arn't many others like it.
band I enjoy as much as Pixies are: Rollerskate Skinny Ani DiFranco Delicatessen John Frusciante Nirvana PJ Harvey Red Hot Chili Peppers (particularly the earlier years) Nick Drake Bob Dylan

Posted - 03/23/2006 : 11:23:19 If you want a great band that also SOUND like Pixies and retain that element of quirky genius, Drive Like Jehu (and then Hot Snakes who share some members with them) are really good. However, all their tracks are very thrashy and punky so they don't have the variety of Frank's songwriting. I love 'em though. |

Posted - 03/22/2006 : 09:12:24 There aren't many bands as good as the Pixies, let alone better. These are the ones I can think of: The Smiths, They Might Be Giants, The Cure, and The Magnetic Fields. These bands are good but not in the same league: The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon.
