Did Frank?
I always thought that "No Aloha" was about "the fax". And I read somewhere that "I Just Wanna Get Along" is about the Pixies even though the cd booklet says that it's Kelly singing.

The "Safari" ep came out between "Pod" and "Last Splash" and Tanya Donelly had just left Throwing Muses- it seems like all those songs are about the break-ups of the Pixies and TM.

I was wondering too if FB wrote any songs about the Pixies or Kim.

Yep, he was trying to distance himself from his old band. But when you're playing with Joey Santiago, it's a bit hard... I agree with the fact that some songs didn't fit into the Pixies' style. Don't You Rile 'Em and Fu Manchu are good illustrations.

By the way, the Pixies didn't play Hang On To Your Ego, it was Black solo with John Peel on drums machine. He played Is She Weird (can be found on the Peel Sessions record), Velouria and Allison too.

I think FB and TOTY follow in the direction that some songs on "TLMonde" were going, and, like someone said, they've got Joey and Feldman, but they were meant to be, and are, a distinct change from the Pixies sound.
The sound that most people associate with the Pixies is the sound of "Surfer" and "Doolittle". Compared to "Last Splash" and The Amps record, FB avoids sounding like the Pixies and, like someone said, he does songs that the Pixies wouldn't have done.

I so badly want "In a Doghouse" but I really shouldn't, at least until I see it used somewhere.
SoKD Posted - 12/02/2005 : 11:04:25
Yes, they did a demo of that song (it wasn't a part of a John Peel Session, actually, later it was broadcasted @ a BBC show). Never listened to the pixies version, but I guess it was completely different from the one he did in the first album. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was exactly like the one in "Frank Black", and maybe that's why the pixies never officially released it: because it didn't suit their style... :-)

Right now I'm listening to Fu Manchu: saxophones, synth strings... never heard these things on a pixies album.

kromkamp Posted - 12/02/2005 : 09:10:45
In fact, the pixies did play Hang on to your Ego, at a BBC Peel session :)

I think the 'next pixies' album would have sounded very much like the first FB album, but I think TOTY was pretty much a departure from that sound.

That's true, but...

I think his style did changed: the songs were longer, the arrangements richer, lots of different genres were "explored"... Of course there were Santiago and Feldman, and of course you cannot radically change your way of creating music in a couple of years, but I don't see how the pixies could play electropop (Hang on to your ego) or reggae (Fiddle Riddle).

Not to mention that when he started his solo career he even changed his stage name!

jimmy, billgoodman is right: "in a doghouse" CD doesn't contain any liner note but a short manifesto written by Kristin Hersh (kind of "why we did what we did"). And Italy could be a great country, if it wasn't so full of italians... BTW, have you seen the Pixies @Newport? Kim Deal wore a tee shirt of the italian rugby (or maybe football) national team!
chineselover Posted - 12/02/2005 : 06:46:25
There is not doubt that he was trying to distance himself - you can see this in interviews etc, or maybe suffice to say he wanted to make sure that other people thought he didn't care about his old band, in order to stop all the questions. If you remember at the time that the huge deal about the mysterious forth coming debut album from former pixies frontman was that he was actually going to sing!

That's why he included Brackish Boy (an unreleased song from the Trompe's sessions) on his first and eponymous record ! That's why he asked Joey to collaborate once again with him on Frank Black and Teenager too... Joey toured with him also in 1993.

Frank Black began to distance himself from his previous band, the 1994 tour attests from this, but it's really with Cult Of Ray that he didn't sound anymore as the Pixies. Defintely no reminescence at all... Just pure rock & roll.

(I was exposing my opinion from a sound and style point of view, not studying the lyrics).

SoKD, Italy seems like such a great country to live in, maybe it's different when you've always lived there, but it must be interesting. I'd like to go someday (my mom's side of the family comes from the island of Malfa near Sicily)

Do you have the Muses CDs "In A Doghouse"? I've got all the songs but I'd really like to know what the packaging inside is like, pictures, if KH wrote any liner notes, ect.

I couldn't agree more. For those, just like me (and not you, I guess), who don't speak english as a native language it's always good to have some "hint" about the meaning of the songs... And all these guys from the "Boston scene" (Black, Deal, Donelly, Hersh) do like being hermetic!!!

I'm from the town that gave birth to San Valentino (St. Valentine). Just between St. Peter and St. Francis. And yep, I always lived here.

Hi, SoKD, I know that KH and TD were step-sisters, but from what I read, they knew each other and were friendly before they became step-sisters. Anyway, I agree with you mean about "Thief". "Untogether" from Belly's "Star" also sounds like it's about KH. I love the "Best of Belly" CD- it's great to read about what some of the songs are about.

Yeah, Donelly and Hersh were friends as kids already, always hanging out together. So in the end, their parents also get to know each other ... and like each other. Eventually they divorced so two of them could marry each other or at least become a couple.

"The band was formed in 1983 by step-sisters Kristin Hersh (vocals/guitar) and Tanya Donelly (guitar/vocals)"
(taken from: http://www.4ad.com/throwingmuses/profile/ ).

I think they grew up together in a kinda "hippie family", so the word "step-sister" should be taken in a wide sense...
Carl Posted - 11/23/2005 : 11:19:19
Fuck, I don't know if I ever heard that they were stepsisters, or else I forgot hearing that long ago!

(BIT OT)
Actually, Hersh and Tonelly were stepsisters, so they were "more than just friends". Anyway, if they argued in the past, it's ok now, since Tanya sang some backing vocals in the last Throwing Muses album, quoted as "the prodigal Muse".

I always think about Kristin Hersh when I listen to a Belly B-Side called Thief (beautiful song, BTW): "Because of you I came, because of you I leave"... "She's dragging me through places I didn't want to be seen"... "I wanna know why the monsters that hurt you so, don't look like those things we battled so long ago" (this may be a reference to Kristin's mental illness)"And I thought I did my part,
When I pulled you out of there"... Mmm... as I'm writing these lines, I realise the song could also be about Kim Deal\The Breeders...

I've always been interested in the Throwing Muses split when Tanya left. I remember a Kristin Hersh interview from 1994 when they asked her about the Belly record and she said she "heard it once, in a club". It seemed pretty snotty- they'd been friends since they were kids and I know if someone that I had been close with put out an album, I'd go out and buy it.

From the 1st song, from the 1st Muses album after TD left, "Furious":
"I never taught you to sing/ You carry rocks in your head/ And pitch them without warning"

The 1993 Belly single, "Feed the Tree":
"They put silver where her teeth had been/ Babysilver tooth she grins and grins"

And then the 1995 TM single "Bright Yellow Gun":
"With your bright silver grin/ You own sin/ And I think I need a little poison"

No Aloha? It's about a break-up, I guess, but I'm not sure it's about THE break-up.

Gigantic, I read, it's about an erotic dream Kim once had, where the protagonist had... "a big big love!"...

I thought gigantic was about a movie or a book

This incident:

quote:
BLACK Francis is laying flat on his back in a hall in Belfast. His eyes are closed. Kim, Joey, David, the Pixies' support band Pale Saints and myself are standing in a circle, looking down at the prone singer. Kim sweetly coaxes all of us onto our knees. "Now." she informs us, "We're gonna levitate Charles by the power of thought. All of you put two fingers under him, then repeat after me." Fingers are slid under Charles bulk. Kim begins her litany. "He looks as light as a feather," she recites. Seven voices repeat the phrase. Nobody thinks this is going to work. "He IS as light as a feather!" concludes Kim triumphantly. "Now pick him up!" We all exert minimal pressure on the singer's body. Amazingly, Charles rises from the ground and hangs six inches from the floor, suspended only by our token effort. We're all grudgingly impressed. Even Kim looks surprised. Unfortunately, we try it again a few seconds later without the mystical phrases and it works just as well. Still. It was a good game, for a while. And on the road for three months, The Pixies have realised that you need good games.

Ahh... ignore the italics.

What incident, DruggedBunny? You mean them splitting? Or the fax thing, or something?

Found the lyrics to that song:

My Boyfriend Died

He looks sick
He is sick
WOA!!

Home tonies and highballs
I'm happy to be sad

He looks dead
He is Dead
WOA!!

Your not the hero
That fuck
couldn't see
stereophonics, splitsville
and that's allright with me

He looks as light as a feather
he is as light as a feather
when I count to three we will lift him

Lucky I'm winter, a looker and there is shades of black
don't trouble the master he said don't bother him now
home tonies and highballs, he said don't bother him know

My boyfriend died

Kelley Deal's song "My Boyfriend Died" refers to the incident with the Pixies in the 2nd paragraph here, years after the Pixies finished:

http://aleceiffel.free.fr/squad.html

"He looks as light as a feather/He *is* as light as a feather!/When I count to three, we will lift him."

I've always thought that Freedom Rock had a reference to the Pixies, he was saying he wasn't part of the band anymore...
chineselover Posted - 11/18/2005 : 12:22:04
God I have never thought any of things - personally I think none of their songs are about band members (I know I’m repeating myself!), I’m really surprised that other fans actually think that - that is def never the way I read the dynamic between the band! From any interviews I have read down through the years about franks lyrics, or how they got on as friends, I have to say I don't think it likely.. I also do not put any credence in secret messages in any of the song lyrics - I just don't think frank and Kim are the type of people to sit in all moody and broody, penning songs about each other, just not their style as far as I’m concerned - that was all best left to Lennon and McCartney

I always imagined 'Do You Love Me Now?' was referring to Frank
...of course I know it could be about anyone.
Also, I recently had a notion that subbacultcha was about Kim even
though I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it wasn't. Kim seems more like an 'erotic vulture' than the other lady.
