"Pixies", by French journalist Emmanuel Dazin.

The Amazon.fr blurb is so full of typos it's almost funny ("The Jesus ans Mary Chain", "Nirvan", "Palcebo"). It also, puzzlingly, dubs the band "the Pixies brothers".

I have no idea what the book's like though. Apparently it's very slim.

Just read it and it's indeed pretty good.

I thought it was good.

Except when the author calls Lyle Workman's guitar on The Cult of Ray "unbearable", but I suspect he only does it to piss off Frog in the Sand.

Nice that FB.Net and folks maintaining this site get mentioned. Those Kim songs that wer'nt used surely made there way into The Breeders material?

So is Kim a Pixies Brother?

"The recording process is laborious. (...) Sometimes the Pixies have to resort to jamming, like on the Velvet-inspired "Loop", a lost track that a journalist from [French mag Les] Inrock[uptible]s could hear in April [1991]."

Not a real song then, only a "jam".

Not only "Loops" but all the story behind the Trompe sessions!

He writes that two Kim Deal's songs were reharsed and rejected for their last album, you can read too that some of the songs intended for Trompe were suddenly hidden and kept for the first Frank Black LP...

I bought the book and I must say that Amazon is doing it a great disservice. The gross mistakes I mentioned aren't in the book itself. In fact, you can't fault an author who
- says Frank was born in Boston on the very first page,
- says the source for this info is "Frank Black's semi-official site",
- quotes from the lyrics to "Pan American Highway" (and we're still only on the first page!),
- in an appendix on Pixies-related web sites, under "must-see sites", writes: "www.frankblack.net (Frank Black semi-official site, run & maintained by Dave Noisy, Dean Katsiris, Brian Salvatore, Derek Olson and their friends; a goldmine)."

So, the next question is, Emmanuel Dazin, where are you? Care to join the discussion? We obviously need to know more about "Loops"...

I believe that the text in which this strange phrase appears is from the Amazon staff, not the author of the book.

Wow, I hope they release an english translation!

The Pixie Brothers? What, is that some sort of collaboration with The Flying Burrito Brothers? :D

I bought it and it seems good. The author talks about some unreleased songs from the Trompe's sessions, one was called "Loops".

i'm changing my tune now. i used to think it would be better for a book to be written by a non uber-fan but now i'm thinking it should be written by a fan. at least it will have some soul to it
