Hi everyone this is my first post =) jeje I loooove pixies they´re fantastic, the best thing that ever happened to me, I´ve been listening to them since I was 8 =)
I think that maybe this mysterious thing that drives me to listening to them over and over and over again is the mixture between the simplicity of the melodies and the rare and complex profundity in the lyrics..

you guys make me smile.

I reserve such action for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'

the guitar is my friend.
Carl Posted - 08/29/2005 : 04:37:21
I just hope you mean guitar, Soren! It sounds like you mean to chop the precious album to pieces in some inexplicable record-destroying fit! Come to your senses, man! ;)
fbc Posted - 08/29/2005 : 04:34:34
I must admit, no other band has had such a lasting impression on me than the Pixies.
It's so damn hard to explain why the've hit the spot like no other. a mystery to me.

And i've just realised i haven't listened to Trompe Le Monde in it's entirety in yonks.
This is gonna be good....now where's my axe!
Carl Posted - 08/29/2005 : 04:27:11
Kono, you are a true Pixite!

revisiting this quote, and this time NOT not paying attention to everything after 'well, i thought that "Bossa Nova" was probably the best record.' like a bonehead, two things occured to me that had, for some reason, never occured to me before-

1. for the last couple years i have listened to the pixies albums daily, over and over again, sometimes singling out one album for months at a time, and i've never tired of them, not even a little

and

2. with the exception of every pixies album, the white album, and the lips' yoshimi, no album has inspired me to listen to it again as soon as it ends

i find this amazing.
fbc Posted - 08/25/2005 : 04:03:37
my pleasure.

I don't know. They are a good band. It just seems like they take themselves a little too seriously.
Newo Posted - 08/22/2005 : 13:29:01
I wasn't being serious btw. U2 blow donkeys for quarters, to quote a certain forumgoer.

Disco Stu doesn't advertise!

"Look at that jacket Stu! It was custom made just for you!"

"Disco Stu doesn't advertiiiiiise."
VoVat Posted - 08/22/2005 : 10:29:38
Disco Stu wants you to be comfortable while he does his thing.

But I do consider Disco Stu a prophet so what do I know?
Newo Posted - 08/21/2005 : 17:00:39
Quiet you blasphemers, these are obviously the rhymes of a prophet:

I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation

Trompe Le Monde is my favourite, just the bassline on Space and the scream in Sad Punk gets it that.

I'm not sure if a prophet would be singing a song called "Discotheque".

By and large, it's lazy journalism that's to blame.

bono is in my brothers religion book as a modern day prophet along with the pope and ghandi.i shit you not.

I was still sort of a fan of U2 and then I saw Bono on the cover of Time magazine with a huge caption that read,"Can Bono Save the World?" That was going a little too far, I hate when these rock stars get diefied like that.
VoVat Posted - 08/20/2005 : 10:41:04
Yeah, even though Bossanova is my favorite, I'd probably have to agree that Doolittle is the most cohesive unit.

well said Z_Zoquis...
Z_Zoquis Posted - 08/20/2005 : 08:45:02
Actually, I personally think Bossanova and Trompe are slightly "lesser" Pixies albums. I think Doolittle is definitely their magnum opus. Its close to a perfect pop album. I know, "pop"? Well, I mean pop in the same sense as the first Ramones record is a perfect pop album. Theres a cohesiveness to the album that somehow makes it even more than the sum of it's parts. I don't get that from the others. Don't get me wrong, I agree that some of the songs on the latter platters are standout Pixies tracks, but as a unit the records don't grab me the same way. I think as fans of the Pixies, we can listen to those latter works and say "yeah, that's great stuff." But for anyone who isn't a fan, I don't think Bossanova or Trompe would have the same impact as Doolittle. That's not to say that in order to be great a record has to appeal to "the masses." But I think one indicator of how great a record is is that it can appeal to both the fan and the masses.

...As for FB dismissing those later Pixies albums himself: apart from the possible reasons given by fbc, it happens quite often that the artist is its own worst judge. You know, all those stories of classic songs which were, according to the artist, "maybe just good enough for a B-side".
geertos Posted - 08/09/2005 : 07:04:54
I disagree. It's a documentary. It states the facts as objectively as possible. And I don't know if you noticed, but every single article or "best albums ever"-list out there mentions Surfer/Doolittle as their highlights, while giving less kudos to Bossa/Trompe, so this documentary isn't exactly way off.

Besides, the documentary makers weren't able to get the rights to show Bossa/Trompe-era concerts fragments. That may have been another reason why the the documentary chose to largely bypass these two albums altogether. I mean, they couldn't praise it to death and not show a single song off it, could they?

As for Bono: whether you like him or not, it's nice to have someone that famous praising the Pixies on tape. I think it's one of the most valuable additions to the documentary, and it may actually convert some people. Not so for the interviews with the likes of PJ Harvey, Blur, Six by Seven: anybody who's interested in them, was already interested in the Pixies anyway.
