I put both versions on a CD awhile back and was listening to it on a walkman this morning….
I have to say that the Purple Tape version is far better than the Doolittle version….
Frank Black sings it with a bit more ‘soul’ and the fade ending is much better than what seems to be a far too contrived ending on Doolittle.
This song was never really one of my favourites, but the older version has made it one.

I have the purple tape version a download but I much prefer the Doolittle version. I dunno, its as if the PT version is too jarring and just not as well put together. It just sounds better when the riff is played with more emphasis.

that song sure has got a hook

have you heard the live version?
camp cop spells out P/E/O/P/L/E before the last verse

it all looks beautiful to me

H.Y.C.M. by the Village Pixies

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, go to a PIXIES show.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to sing it wrong H-Y-C-M.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to sing it wrong H-Y-C-M.
It's fun to sing it wrong H-Y-C-M.

You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, right Down to the Well.
I'm sure they can help you today.

It's fun to sing it wrong H-Y-C-M.

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so tight ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
There's a place there called the Down to the Well.
They can start you back on your way.

Young man, young man, what do you wanna be?
If you go to San Francisco, just remember it all is disco.

The purple tape version is interesting, but I find myself missing the second verse. I do think the purple tape version of "Down To The Well" is better than the Bossanova one, though.

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.

hhmmm...i think the bridge part "you gota wait so long...so long, so long." part is better on doolitle but the purple tape version is a lot more raw. its not my favourite song and i normally skip it when im listening to doolittle or the purple tapes so im not sure which i like more :P

I prefer the doolittle version of 'Here Comes your man'. i think the song is better with longer verses and without the extra bit in the introduction. you know?

yeah, i agree, i owned the purple tape version before the dolittle version, and i much prefer the purple tapes version, same goes with older v newer versions 'down to the well' they just seem to have more to them emotionally
