Posted - 05/09/2005 : 14:09:44 Dick Dale's definitely King Of The Surf Guitar, and worth checking out because it's superb, but it's a little more edgy and raw than what would usually be classified as 'surf music'. Historically, it was an instrumental offshoot of rock'n'roll, keeping the simple structures and instrumentation, but more characterised (as previously mentioned) by a very distinctive guitar tone, so-called 'splashy' reverb. Look out also for whammy bar use, very distinct melodies and tremolo picking.
Look for bands like The Ventures, The Surfari's ('Wipeout'), The Chantays, The Surftones, The Tornadoes etc., you must know 'Pipeline'. Obviously, the Pulp Fiction soundtrack is a good introduction, and there's a compilation called 'Big Surf' which is also good.
In terms of Pixies, check out the melodic guitar line in 'Ana', 'Cecilia Ann', tremolo-picking in 'Levitate Me', the riff to 'Here Comes Your Man', the solo in 'There Goes My Gun', etc.

Posted - 05/09/2005 : 10:19:52 i only say ana because of the lyrics and the'surfer' acronym. cecilia ann is 100% surf guitar
try the Ventures or the Shadows (hank marvin, strat king). Instrumental music. |

Posted - 05/07/2005 : 20:40:47 man the sea or sound is tense, blissfull and dreamy. most rides depending on the spot last just seconds, the rest of the time you're waiting and watching the horizon. aN..Tisa.....pAtiOn.. and fear, again depending on the conditions are just a few emotions that ebb and flow.
PIXIES songs that sound like surf tunes, is that what you're asking? well if you relate them to waves then some are nice and easy rides and some scare the sand off ya.
