I was at an 80s theme pub in my home town of dundee and asked the dj to play the pixies but all i got was a strange look and a no.For a dj he doesn't know much about good music as he then went on to play spandu ballet!

I was at a club that played Here Comes Your Man- couldn't believe it. I was in the toilet when it came on and I rushed out and started going mental! |

Anytime I DJ at the student indie night, I play a Pixies song- usually something from the Japanese Pixies covers album I have. I've confused a few people with the Debaser cover :)

there is an 80's 'alternative' music night near me, they wont play the pixies then, but they will on the student indie night....its all very confusing |

To be honest, go up to any DJ in the UK, ask for the Pixies and you'll get a strange look. Apart from the uber-hip indie rock DJ's with shaggy hair and sallow expression.

I think the purpose of those bar theme nights is to dig up the cheese and gimmicky pop-culture bullshit that happened to surface during the decade in question. It's not about recognising quality or celebrating anything meaningful. It's just about nostalgia for things that just simply were. Being recorded in the '80s is not enough. It has to be something that was universally recognised and canibalized by the masses all in one singular moment, then looked back upon with whimsy, like it was all a funny joke and utterences of "weren't we stupid back then?" Nostalgia is bullshit.

DJs at '80s nights only want to play the cheese from the '80s, not the good stuff. It's like if you go to a '70s night, they will only play disco, completely ignoring all the great music like Elvis Costello or the Ramones. I've had a similar problem at a local bar's '80s night. A friend of mine requested some Motorhead, but the DJ absolutely refused to play it. |

i still have a hard time believing the pixies came from the 80s. there music is by definition, classic - transcends time, timeless. most of their songs sound like they were written/recorded in the past couple years.

When the majority and society think of the 80's, the Pixies are not apart of it (what Daisy said). They're the band that influenced blah blah blah. That's the catergory they're apart of. Maybe if you went to a 90's theme night you might get lucky and here Debaser. Ha! One of the best tunes of the 80's. |

Well even though a lot of their stuff was recorded, I don't consider it 80's music. When I think of 80's music, I think stuff like Madonna, Duran Duran, Culture Club and bands that played on John Hughes's Movie Soundracks.
