Posted - 04/12/2005 : 19:35:15 I am a guitar player. If you ask me who the greatest guitar players are in the history of rock, I would say Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani. HOWEVER, if you ask me what guitar players intrigue me the most, it is the Santiago-type guys. You know, like Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, ect.. Those guys that are about experimenting with different sounds, using the pedals like there was no tomorrow, getting that incredible sustain off of a barchord. Joey (doing his best Jiminy Glick impersonation), we salute you!

I play too, and agree totally with you on liking the guys who do their job with style but without moving up to center stage for a 3 minute solo in every song. I've been hanging around the Ultimate Guitar forums recently and man that place is like the last great refuge of shredders and head-bangers. They just hate Nirvana and Green Day around there. :) I've never understood the appeal of guys like Vai and Malmsteen and all the other wizards of the metal world. I mean I understand the appreciation of the technical skill required to do what they do, but the music to me sounds utterly soul-less. Personally, I find playing something like Alison with it's barrage of barre chords way more fun than learning some two thousand note Malmsteen solo...
No kidding! Soulless being the key word there. I was just talking about this with a friend of mine. Being a good guitar player, in my head, doesn't mean blowing up your fuckin' metronome, but playing with melody and innovating. With Joey's guitar parts, he added so much to the Pixies sound and made everything blend so well, and while it was loud and explosive, there was still a tune in every song that you could get stuck whistling forever.

Posted - 04/22/2005 : 13:29:50 Yes, Joey is a innnovator. His approach to melody and knowledge of what a single note can do to a chord structure make it all matter.
The wankers should all take a lesson from people like Joey. Ever seen Lou Reed solo? He's freaky and fun to watch. |
Carl |
Posted - 04/13/2005 : 10:41:43 He goes for interesting noises and nice melodies, rather than filler guitar-wank...excpt maybe on Vamos and a couple of other tracks, but he freaks out in style! |
