So when I went to the Pixies concert in November, I saw a girl from the same university program I’m in….and she says, ‘I never figured you listened to the Pixies’….kinda insulting, but I said, ‘yea well’. Then, a few weeks later, a guy who was in one of my classes, whom I never talked to before, was wearing a Pixies’ sweatshirt. So I went up to him and we started talking about music in general…blablabla….it was nice. It’s weird that there are so many people you may have a lot in common with, but would not have known otherwise, unless such a situation arises….I’m not about to start wearing a Pixies-T in order to exploit the situation, but man, its hard to meet interesting people.

This is a great topic!

I love Pixies fans. I love how shameless they (we, me) are. Anyone have this experience?.....Driving down the road in the city with the Pixies pumping through your car stereo and you are at a red light...somebody is standing on the sideway, hears the music and shouts out "Yeah Pixies!" You feel like you could just stop the car hop out and have a chat with the person. I don't know how many times that has happened to me, and before there was even talk about a reunion. As long as there have been the Pixies there has been just wonderful fans.

Hang on a minute, we are atalking about Pixies, not The Catholics, The Breeders, The Martinis or anyone else. If they know a lot about the Pixies then they are a Pixies fan. Simple as.

Thats me, my wife took the path of the frank and I took the path of the kim, it is only in the last 2 months I have listened to his albums.

Now people are like, oh yeah, I have heard about them when you talk about them which is cool.

I agree Daisy Girl, one of the cool things about this reunion is that people have heard about them if the subject is brought up. But, unfortunately, there are many folks who now dig the Pixies but have not yet listened to Frank Black.

However, now when you introduce someone to Frank's music you can use the Pixies reference and more people will know who you are refering to, and due to their new-found enjoyment of the Pixies, will be more likely to TUNE IN and TURN ON to The Man!

I had a funny experience, when I came back to Chile from the Pixies Concert in Brazil, in the plane I watched a girl with a Pixies T-Shirt, I was wearing a Pixies T-Shirt of the concert too...so she asked me if I like the Pixies and if I went to the concert..my surprise was that she was Chilean too, and she went to the concert too and blah blah blah....today we're friends... It was a cool way to know a friend because of the Pixies.

That's it.....Salu2

Its my considered opinion that wearing a Frank Black T-shirt yourself can give you a good idea of the quality of women. Three answers, or variations upon them:
a) "Frank Black? Who's that?" (bad sign)
b) "The guy from the Pixies right?" (getting better)
c) "That T-shirt is a knock off, the one I'm wearing is official" (the perfect woman)

That's a very interesting story, but what really matters is...did you bang her?

Heh...liking bands like the Pixies in this day in age is like belonging to a secret society it seems. It's exciting to find someone you know likes good music. You have to advertise by wearing band shirts and stuff. I found out this really cool chick I work with digs the Pixies and other really good music. It's one thing to know they listen to them, it's another to be driven home by them when drunk and hear "Doolittle" start up with the car.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

I guess I'm quite lucky with my little gang of pixies loving buddies

(proper pre reunion buddies and everyfink...)

I got introduced to them many moons ago by a guy I was seeing at the time and I fell for the pixies so it was cool to have him to blabber on to about them. It was after the original split (because I was too young and too poor for music at the time) so I got the pixies anf FB solo all in one go (like a magical musical christmas).

Then met a good couple of people when I went to uni who already knew and dug the pixies and FB (I found out over alcoholic so whaddya listen to then, whass yer mooooooshic tashtes type conversation) who gushed like idiots with me when the reunion was announced and I went to the gig with!

I'm glad for the reunion because I was a late starter (circa 1999)and am so greatful for the opportunity to see them (so I don't have to listen to the ex go on about how he saw the pixies and I never got to)((and because they rock my world of course)) but I'd seen FB & TC's a couple of times and I was happy at just that really. My friend texted me not long after the reunion had been anounced and asked if it would be wrong of him to slap to some blink 182 fan-girl who'd asked him at work if he'd 'heard of this great new band the pixies' in the circumstances I thought it very reserved of him to text me first...

Yeah, as does Tobafett, I usually inquire as to whether they've listened to Frank, and then if not, (which is usually) I end up gushing on and on about how great it is and how they owe it to themselves to, ect...

I ask--"what's your fave pixies album?" and follow that up with "what do you think of Frank's solo work?"

that gleans out a good 40-50%.

What's the appropriate question to discover who is not a real fan?

mammynuns Posted - 01/30/2005 : 08:41:18
as much as i hate the snobbery thats involved a lot of peoples taste in music... i think that in the case of the pixies its excuseable for a few reasons.

first of all, everyone and their mother knows the pixies as the band that influenced the new rock movement but never got due credit themselves. so its always been such a hip thing to say you love the pixies. theyre kinda like the jesus of modern rock.

but ontop of that... with their reunion... it also became really cool to get excited about it. so in less than a decade and a half we saw two reasons to pretend to love the pixies, whereas with most bands, there is just a period of time where liking them is the thing to do.

so with the pixies, i do feel justified in shooting people dirty looks when they get all high and mighty about their love for the band when they really only know a few songs.

im not saying that true pixies fans are special. i mean, theyre just a band like every other band, and the real fans are just people who dig what theyre doing. im definitely not saying that they are 'superior' to anyone, just that i like them more than almost any other rock band.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 01/30/2005 : 07:49:00
You should do. Just test them to find out if they are a real fan.

That's what I listen sometimes, people who pretend to "love them"...but they don't really do, they just heard a few songs and now with the reunion they think it's cool to "love the Pixies". That's the reason why I don't talk with almost anyone about them!
