Posted - 12/22/2004 : 11:34:34 this might be a pointless topic. but the way charles screams 'down' on the BBC and Purple Tape version of this song is absolutely AMMMMMMAZING. i dont think ive ever heard a human scream like this.... does anyone have any idea how another human being(namely myself) could recreate such a noise?
i've spent a lot of time(sadly) screaming my ass off to get that yelping noise but have had 0000000 success. any ideas?
thanks! |

Posted - 01/02/2005 : 04:07:42 When I scream, the harsh tone seems to come from a place in the highest region of the throat, almost in my mouth. I've never encountered problems, and everything it fine, and I can mirror FB in many songs, almost identically. However I am a very peculiar person orally, as I was born with two extra teeth and three tonsils. Though, my friend tried to copy me, and started spitting blood. Mammynuns method probably is best.

Posted - 01/01/2005 : 21:57:10 ....Also the scream that Malkmus lets out in the middle of Baptist Blacktick, that one was fucking brutal even for someone that has been listening to plenty of screaming music for a long time. Chino from deftones has an amazing scream as well, much better than Rollins, Rollins couldn't keep up with any of the other Black Flag vocalists at all, Chino is amazing he jump octaves while screaming and then go right back to singing in true voice and doing falsetto stuff, the only guy that seems to be able to touch Frank Black with the screaming stuff regularly.

Posted - 01/01/2005 : 21:54:55 You want to talk about a guy that could scream and yelp with the best of them you have to respect Blake from Jawbreaker for their first few albums, before he had the surgery on his throat and started just singing normally for fear of being a mute the rest of his life.

Posted - 01/01/2005 : 03:36:42 I reckon the best screams are 'Taaaaaammme' on the live version of tame on Purple Tape 2/Alec Eiffel B-side. When I saw them live at Roskilde and he screamed 're-pent' in Caribou I thought he was gonna explode!
I saw an interview somewhere and FB said he was taught to scream by a monk in Thailand somewhere...
I am not a fan of the old version of down to the well, it sounds too girly to me, but it's cool to hear a different version.

Posted - 12/30/2004 : 17:24:59 Aurora-borealis: yeah man, you should be careful. one of my friends got vocal nodes from simply singing from his throat... he didnt even scream regularly at all. it seems as though he'll recover eventually.... but he hasnt been able to sing for some months now.
does your throat ever get really sore from practicing? its pretty remarkable that you have been screaming this way for years and havent run into any problems. |

Feck, are you sure? Being the hypochondriac I am, this little piece of information is making me very nervous... I've been practicing the FB-signature scream for a couple of years now, using nothing but my throat!

Posted - 12/30/2004 : 16:23:42 I think Frank has the best scream ever, I was at a festival this summer and Danko Jones or Brian Molko (placebo) couldn't compete with him at all although kristin hersh really does some great ones on that Fifty Foot Wave ep.

Posted - 12/27/2004 : 09:06:30 yeah, i can immitate the caribou scream and the tame scream. for anyone interested, the way to do it is to push just a tiny bit from the throat. when you scream most of your support HAS to come from your stomach/diaphraigm otherwise you'll killllll your vocal cords. they develop calouses and youll need to get the surgically removed and all sorts of bad stuff. but i found that as long as you have enough air/support from your tummy, pushing a TINY TINY bit from your throat doesnt bother me at all and produces that really gritty caribou repent sound.
but that live down to the well scream.... thats a whole different animal. its so high pitched and funny and evil and everything in the world and shit. id pay to be able to do that! |

Posted - 12/27/2004 : 04:30:55 I know it's not really believable, but I can scream very Black Francis-esque. I learned it singing In Heaven, and Nirvana's Hairspray Queen (though im not a Nirvana fan). I think the closest sounding I get, is U Mass, at the end as he breaks down and basically screams his head off. I think the secret, it to produce the sound in the upper regions of the throat, nearer the nose, and not deeper. Otherwise irritation occurs, and you also make a roaring heavy metal sound, which is not ver good at all!
But when you scream like that, you don't know how good it feels. Caribou is a classic. REPENT!! REPEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAANT.

Posted - 12/25/2004 : 08:27:10 yeah man.... hes goes NUTS at the end of is she weird at the bbc. thats one of the things i adore about the pixies. im not really into that sort of loud noisy rock stuff.... but these guys can pull it off so well. he screams like a mad man.... but its still musical. BRILLIANT! |

Posted - 12/25/2004 : 04:11:13 The Down To The Well scream is one of my favorite Pixies moment. A scream that I also really like is the BBC version of Is She Wierd. It's totally brutal and absolutely scared the shit out of me the first time I heard it.

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 13:11:00 I read about that too - "sing it like you hate the bitch" or something to that effect. It fucking worked, that's for sure!
So "Oh!Darling" helped create the Black Francis/Frank Black scream, another cool connection to the Beatles. |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 12:39:51 yeah, i read somewhere that some guy who owned a little flower shop taught him how to sing when he was really young. |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 11:40:18 Interesting factoid, Antoinette. I'll have to spend more time with the Beatles. That might help. May I add Henry Rollins to the list of spine-tingling screamers. Not nearly as musical as Frank, but very scary. His "work" on "Who's Got the 10 1/2?". . . mercy.

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 10:46:04 FB learned to scream singing along to Paul's "Oh! Darling." Both he and John had incredible screams. |

Posted - 12/22/2004 : 18:52:38 Frank is my favorite when it comes to screamers - I saw the Pixies live on 12/5 and man oh man can he still scream...one of my favorite Frank tunes is "I Switched You", his scream is bloody menacing on that song and the music's got an apocalyptical earthshaking groove! God, what a beast of a song.
Another screamer I really like is Lennon, specially on the "Plastic Ono Band" record. My favorite tune is "Well Well Well", it's pure primal scream - he fucking shreds his vocals on that song. Frank would do a killer cover of "Well Well Well". Either that one or "Yer Blues"! Man, that would be awesome.

Posted - 12/22/2004 : 12:51:14 I have the same frustration. What most people call fine singing, I don't much care for. I want to be able to scream in the style of Mr. Black. But when I try, it just comes out sounding like Howard Dean. Do you all have any other favorite screamers? |

Posted - 12/22/2004 : 11:50:45 I don't know, but hearing the album version of down to the well and then comparing it to the bbc version, it's kind of puzzling. Down to the well was one of the first Pixies songs Frank wrote, and it took years for him to take the fun out of the song and record it on Bossanova. Shame on you, Frank!? |
