Hey everyone, here's what we're planning for a server upgrade:

* going from 128mb of RAM to 512mb

* install a SATA PCI card, and a 10k rpm SATA HD (size..?)

We'll use one of the old drives as a backup, and copy all the 'accessed' files over to the new drive (ie, all the website stuff, SQL, page file.) and keep the boot drive the same.

Pete and i are confident this upgrade should be more than sufficient for quite a while... Any thoughts, comments or recommendations?

We're looking at a Maxtor SATA card (4 drives), not sure on what brand of HD..prolly WD.

The server is an old PII 400, for those who may be interested. =P

Anyone think or know if there'd be much of an advantage to having a gig of RAM over 512mb?

Running Win2K. Of course there's not much on there besides websites..tho there are quite a few websites.

That may be true for the cheapo models you see in retail stores, but the Compaq Deskpro is a business PC. The ones from the late '90s were heavy, solid, and generally reliable. Some of those EN model widebodies must weigh 20 kg.

Weren't the ones put in Compaq's, HP's, etc specially manufactured low-end drives so that the computers could sell for cheaper? I heard this rumour once before, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I believed in IBM years ago, then had one go bad. It was only a few months old. They sent me another (a refurb) under warranty and it lasted a week under light use. I was afraid to use the second replacement and it still sits in a drawer. All three were made in Hungary. I've seen lots of IBMs go bad on machines here at work, too. They really lost it. At least most of the WDs I've seen go bad were fairly old (mostly Compaq Deskpros from '98-'00).

Aye, we're not going near IBM.

I've had mostly good experiences with Maxtors, almost all my HD's (5+) are Maxtor, tho i have had to replace a few.. We'll prolly go with WD.

Really? I've never had a problem with a harddrive that wasn't Maxtor. Even the high-end Quantums have failed on me (or rather, I've seen them fail and had to do the work to replace them). I've yet to see a Western Digital go and that'd be my choice. I've never used IBM. They're reputed to be the best, but if you've seen two go, I'd guess you feel about them as I do about Maxtors.

I'm partial to Maxtor HDs. We replace lots of WDs here at work. And I have no confidence in IBM after personally having two of them die. Still haven't had a Maxtor die on me.
