Thanks to forum member jravich, we have a pretty cool new feature to add. Now, wherever you are on the web, whatever you're doing, you can quickly search the FrankBlack.Net Discopedia. All you need is a newish browser, namely Firefox 2 or IE 7.

All you have to do is go visit the FrankBlack.Net Home Page (or the Discopedia home page) and pull down menu you use to select your search engine (usually in the top right). You will see, amongst Google, eBay, and others, one that says "Add Search FrankBlack.Net Discopedia" or something to that effect. Click on that, and voila.

Jared even took the time to implement a suggestions feature, so, for example, when you start typing in "bad", it will suggest "Bad Harmony", "Bad, Wicked World", and "Do You Feel Bad About It".

So thanks to him for adding this cool new feature to our site. Hope it comes in handy for some of you folks. I know it'll be handy for doing the podcasts at any rate. Enjoy!

Outstanding work. I was going to suggest the one-result-only tweak, but I didn't want to give you any more headaches. :)

It's looking good!

I have spent a bunch of time improving the search to include albums and other releases. As well, if you search for something and only one result comes back, it automagically opens that particular result for you.

The comment feature is still gone as it is being tweaked for the backend.

Two minutes to type, 2 hours to code.

If someone were to sign up for Rhapsody, eMusic, Yahoo, Napster, or applicable ones then yeah, the site gets some funds from them. Asking people to donate is tiring and mildly embarrassing to say the least. As well, people buying tracks off iTunes or any items of Amazon, so long as they start by clicking on one of our links.

We don't promote any service explicitly, for each song we've gone out and found it on any and all services we could (this takes a lot of time), so the links are custom-entered for each one. So it's also a bit of a service on our part in that the links take you right to the song or album. The nice thing with Rhapsody, for Americans anyway, is that you can actually listen to a song or album free without even entering your name or anything (they give 25 free listens per IP per month). So you could be browsing, want to hear a song, and just click on the link and it's playing. That said, we haven't had any activity reported from them which leaves me wondering if it's even working.

To date, funds have only come from eMusic and Amazon.

I've thought about replacing the forum search with google, but our site search works better if you know what you're doing and tweak the settings. Not ideal, but there are threads I've only been able to find through our own search. For the rest, you can still use google anyway.

I'll try to add album searching to the Discopedia, but I'm only one man and I have umpteen podcasts to edit in addition to all sorts of other little things to get sorted out on the site before I take off. You know, plus real life, which I have sacrificed far too much of for this site in the last few months.

it doesn't seem to search for album titles,as mentioned already. This is great thanks. However, what about Google's site searching service? Can't that be adapted for the whole site and integrated into the pages etc.

Then we'd have a working forum search as well (which has never worked for me).

Also, I hadn't noticed previously, but does the site get royalties or something for pushing the Rhapsody service via the Discopedia. (Using google may also generate funds through the click-advertising).

Sorry, just putting some thoughts down. I seem negative, but think this is a great idea/innovation.

I'd be willing to try it out but I need a little better idea of how the search function works for the site.

If someone else does the programming, or at least the bulk of it, no problem. :)

I don't think it's the apostrophe because the same thing happens if you search for just "workshop" or "oddballs."

Also:

On FireFox 2, it will say "Add Search the FrankBlack.net Discography"

On IE7, it will say "Search the FrankBlack.net Discography" but that will just search while you're on the page. To add it so you can search from anywhere, you'll have to choose "Add Search Providers..." and then select the FB.net option.

The suggestions don't work on IE7, but that's Microsoft's fault.

Yeah, I discovered that too when testing for a different thing: I tried Devil's Workshop and all that gets searched for is devil. The apostrophe truncates the rest, I guess.

Completely the fault of the Discopedia search as you say, I'll get on that. Just not tonight. :)

cool! my first search was "teenager of the year" - unfortunately it highlighted a problem in your search engine (not the add in)... searching an album's title doesn't return songs from that album?

but well done jared
