So. How would you knowledgeable people rate Frank Black as a guitar player?
I can't give you my own opinion here for, because of my lack of knowledge about guitars, I have none.
(If this was already discussed, I apologize. Please don't hit me.)

As far as I am concerned his ability to sing and pull off amazingly complicated chord changes is nothing short of godlike. My favourite is "the man who was too loud." I can't even play it let alone sing as well. |

I too almost prefer his solo acoustic sets at times. The only time I've ever heard him mess up a bit is on "the man who was too loud" (I believe it was on the ftp, french radio program? w/the great "meoowww" for the cat who meows) but he somehow pulls it off, and now I can't imagine listening to that recording any other way. I think it's how well he displaces himself and is just so passionate. (that's probably not strong enough a word)...
...It that regard, he reminds of Lead Belly.
But yeah, he's unbelievable.

He does all that a good rythym guitarist needs to. And of course, he is an AMAZING composer/songwriter, which speaks a bit about his guitar skills. I believe he rarely, if ever, plays lead. (Wasnt there one b-side, recorded right after lyle workman left that he played lead for?)
So Im headed for the stereo store, to get a white noise maker, and turn it up to ten. |

I agree with Crouton. Under- rated rhythm guitarist. Under-rated composer...and so on. Look at the great lead players he's selected for his bands ! I think Frank respects a good lead, and provides us with them. |

Absolutley awesome guitar player, can captivate a room of 2000 with just a single bet up acoustic and his voice, personally my favourite gigs are the ones with just him and his guitars. I hope he will continue to do these solo outings. |

I agree I'd have to say he's one of t he best rhythm guitarists I've heard especially considering the vocals he's pulling off at the same time. As far as lead guitar goes that's hard to say because it's hard to tell when or if he takes lead unless you're watching live but I'm sure he's at least proficient in lead guitar.
Also one of the things that points out what a good rhythm guitarist as far as I've seen is the fact that he can pull off all his songs damn near perfectly in just a solo acoustic performance and not go off time, this was also something that really impressed about Johnny Thunders. I'm probably coming off as a moron or jack ass right now, I'm sorry I've had a lot to drink.

Personally, I think he's a very under-rated rhythm guitarist. He pulls off a lot of tricky stuff. Plus, think of this too: All of his work with the Catholics is recorded live, so not only is he pulling off the tricky stuff on guitar..but he's also singing at the same time. That's tough.
