Sounds like he amped it up a notch on this one. It could be Honeycomb will grow on me 'til I realize it's his best (the usuall FB album sceneario for me) but I get a good feeling that he's going to come out with full creativity blazing on this one and the news is really gonna break that he is Here, and I believe he can do it without sounding commercial. We don't throw around Blonde on Blonde lightly around here.

thanks for the post mr. Jontiven. your making me anxious to get this record. the long wait will be worth it. i love the direction of music frank has taken in recent years. black letter days being my favorite. so if you say honeycomb is another transition then i can hardly wait! glad that mr. black is getting his due with the reformed pixies. hopefully that will send honeycomb up the charts. he he. |

You guys won't quit!
Here is the skinny, and it is the honest truth.
We made the record relatively quickly, but allowed ourselves enough time to do additional mixes, add a few background vocals, and do just enough post-tracking production to add a few touches to what we had created originally. When it came to the crunch, we were partial to whichever mixes we had which seemed to capture the spirit in which the songs were cut, and the album is a mix of the original mixes and the later mixes. In some cases, songs are cut between the two mixes.
But the vibe that was created in the studio which fired up Frank Black's mojo to the Nth degree was what we were wedded to, and we all are confident that the final version is chock full of that.
There are several tracks which we recorded that did not make the final cut. I am confident that they will surface eventually, perhaps in a slightly different form---and the reason they did not make the final cut had more to do with whether they fit with the HONEYCOMB vibe or whether they felt like they belonged elsewhere. There is one in particular, "Highway To Lowdown," which I feel is an exceptional song but will feel more special in another surrounding.
I hope this which give you all a little insight into the process that made this album. Nothing was discarded, but some things were held back for good reasons. This is, in many ways, a new beginning for the Frank Black you have known and loved, much like --- and I don't like to make these kind of comparisons gratuitously --- BLONDE ON BLONDE began a new era of record making for Bob Dylan. If you think you know what he's about, think again. He is just hitting his stride.
I think February might be a likely time for HONEYCOMB to emerge, but that is just a guess on my part.

I repent the whole tweaking thing. Don't mean to jump to second guessing conclusions or anything. Absence makes the ears grow hungrier is what I meant. I'm really looking foward to this one. Thanks for all the heads ups Mr. Tiven. And if I may ask, what do you mean by searching the unknown for more honey? additional material? If we can't hear it at least feed us a few scraps. Or not. |

I'd like to know the exact release date of this Honeycomb album. That way I can start counting the seconds out loud and inevitably pissing off everybody I'm around.

Just so none of you get the wrong idea, the extra time spent on HONEYCOMB was to examine a few options which ultimately did not change the album one iota. We got it right the first time, but had to go into the great unknown to see if there was any more honey for the HONEYCOMB. The tweaking is pretty much nonexistent at this point, the time spent gave us an opportunity to reflect and choose exactly which songs would make the final cut. Which we did.
But the actual recordings remain pretty well as they did when we first made them, as it should be.
It is now up to himself and the legendary Mr. Ken Goes to determine when it is available and upon which label.

As I understand it Pentimento means the artist has repented and painted over his own work. Maybe it's a good thing Honeycomb got rudely interupted, time to tweak and retweak every detail, maybe even paint over. My spideysicle senses tell me it'll fully ripen come springtime as the combs fill with honey and will be really really great. Blonde on Blonde great. Meantime have a few more beers, I am. with FbF coming out in october, i'd say honeycomb should be in our hands by march. i wish it was reversed, but hey, i'm still thankful for 2 FB releases in the next 6-9 months

great songs that cohen feller writes. i'm a big fan of "i'm your man". great album. sometimes though the music can get on me. he sure likes those keyboard tones. |
