I don't know really if it's a Frank Black or a Pixies topic:

There are some Joey's interviews around the net talking about their lasts records. And he says something that if they have lasted a bit more, their next record would be filled with surfy-style songs. But in Frank Black self-titled there isn't a peculiar Surf mood. Or I can't hear it... Whatever happened with that?

Maybe he just dropped the surf vibe for "FB"...he did include a Beach Boys song, though!

I kind of got the impression listening to FB's first album that some of it was written around the time of bossanova, try listening to 'All over the world' then put on 'Places named after numbers' Then 'The happening', they are such excellent sufy style tunes, in the same vein as each other.

Great digging ivandivel, I'm surprised there isn't more of a "lost tapes" buzz out there. This news is producing a pavlovian response to my hungry ears. Metaphorically speaking.

The masters were washed out to sea on a wave of mutilation.

Or maybe they'll appear on the next Pixies album. Either way is good.

Wait. The first way isn't actually good at all!

So, where are this surfy songs? Are them in TOTY having lost their surf mood?

That's Misirlou by Dick Dale and it's fantastic :)

Well I can name another surf tune that I like. It is the starting song at the Pulp Fiction CD, I believe it is a song composed or played by guitarist Dick Dale. I think that one sounds quite surfy.

"No Aloha" from the breeders sounds surfy to me too, I like that one a lot.

I love the surfin' pixies!
That's why Bossanova is so good
I can't listen to many other surf songs though
I have a cd by the trashmen
and it's absolutely boring when you listen to it for like 20 minutes

That is interesting. I think the Pixies would've made a killer surf album. I'd love to see those tracks released even if they don't go with surf on their new album.... or a Teenager of the Year style Pixies album where they hit on many genres.

I did a little more digging: in an interview (92) with Bob Mould he says: "Yeah! We've got another song called « The Surf Epic , » three songs strung together by the « Popcorn » break". Ok, enough.

This is a topic that has interested me for a while. There are at least three sources to back up the claim that there are unreleased, surfy not-completed tracks stacked away somewhere. Kim deal from a Rock A My Soul interview:

"Are there any Pixies tracks recorded that have not been released?
- Yes, yes. Definitely.
Can you tell me about them?
- No. Because we’re trying to work those out, because we’re doing another album straight away. that’ll be more surfier, like Bossanova.
We’ve got a lot of recorded material, kind of like Guns ‘n’ Roses. Not enough to make this album and not enough to make that album. We’ve got to wait. We’ve done sort of seven eights of this album and two eighths of that album... see what I mean? We’ve done more than and album’s worth of stuff, but not enough for either of them to come out."

The second source is an interview with Black in Meldoy Maker (i think) where he talks about the recording of trompe le monde, and where he mentions that they are also recording a different album - a surfy album. He specifically mentions "an epic surf song" - which i guess turned up as "surf Epic", and later on as Dog In Sand. He also opened his show on his first solo tour with 2 (or 3?) surfy songs, so the surf mood was very evident around the first album.

Finally - there's your joey reference - which i haven't read - could you provide a link?

Which made me think: the new pixies stuff - is that a continuation of these unfinnished tracks? Anyway - I am kind of disapointed that there isn't more interest in these recordings and what they may sound like. Someone close to the band must have heard them.

Finally, the members of this board should join in on an archeological venture uncovering the details of each fucking pixies and frank black recording. We need it. I need it. We do not need outsider books on the subject.
