Posted - 07/19/2004 : 14:14:35 I'm a huge Springsteen fan and a huge Frank Black fan and I just found out FR&tC's do "I'm Going Down" does anyone know where I can get this?
Also does Frank Black do any other Springsteen covers?
has FB ever commented on the Boss? or listed him as an influence?
thanks for the info.

Thanks,Jason. From your post I learn a lot. Though it seems Sprigsteen is opposite to FB, FB doesn't hate him and listens to him! This fact surprised me. What broad interests in music FB has. Certainly ,"Village of the Sun" always remimded me of Springsteen! In its vigorous vocal style and melody , it resembles some Springsteen's songs like "Darkness on the Edge of Town", I think.

Posted - 07/23/2004 : 07:48:03 it's funny if you listen to "I'm Goin' Down" as if it's a song about.. you know, going down.
i defy you to listen to the song and not think about it in those terms now.

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 02:33:29 Thank you Jason! I don´t have nothing against Springsteen either, I just can´t listen to his music, it doesn´t means nothing to me! I´m still trying to find Oddballs and the B-sides!

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 02:23:03 For Rita (though this has already been posted above):
Frank Black & the Catholics covered Springsteen's "I'm Goin' Down" (off of the Born in the USA album). It's a b-side on the "Dog Gone" CD single. Frank also included it in the tracklist for the forthcoming (or maybe not) b-sides collections he posted about some months ago in the 'Frank Black Making Noise' section of this forum. Also it's a very good cover.
The "trying to be Springsteen & Dylan" song on Oddballs is "Village of the Sun". I don't get that myself, though maybe some of Frank's vocals on the song are Springsteen-ish (Frank's "trying to be's" on the sleeve often appear to refer to Frank's singing rather than the songwriting).
I don't have anything against Bruce, but I do think the greatest contributions the Springsteen family have made to our culture are his sister Pamela's fine performances in Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 |

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 01:54:22 I agree with Darwin. Springsteen has done some really good stuff. Ghost Of Tom Joad, Nebraska is brilliant. Born To Run and Born In The USA has its moments. Why should it be a surprise that Frank has covered a Springsteen song? I'm sure he knows a good song when he hears it.

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 23:43:55 Well... FB actually covered that Springsteen song so it does not seem weird to me to talk about a link between those 2 singers. The link exists : it's a fact.

Born in the USA just hasnt aged well IMO. Too much money for a guy who's music depended on his hopelessness and feelings of inadequacy. Its like Riddick Bowe said "it's hard to get up and do roadwork when you are sleeping in silk pajama's". |

I frankly don't understand the hate for Springsteen. How many of the people that don't like him have listened to Nebraska or The Ghost of Tom Joad? He's a talented song-writer and performer.
I can understand part of why Erebus doesn't like him. Springsteen is a Democrat.
Hey, I like Liz Phair and she's a Democrat! (Can be a challenge, I admit.) |

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 10:44:21 Overrated? In the magazines I read, the critics hate Springsteen.
I don't think he entirely sucks. Born in the USA is one of my favorite tracks from the 80s, along with Faith by George Michael. |

Fran kBlack released an album of B-sides called Oddball. On that album, FB does a couple of songs on which he states he tries to sound like Springsteen and Dylan. This is the only reference to Springsteen I have ever heard from FB. But then again...I am missing a pair of chromosomes.

He tries to sound like Springsteen?? I am in shock! Can´t understand how someone can like Frank Black´s or the Pixies music and Springsteen at the same time! I´m sorry, it just doesn´t fit...in my opinion

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 06:06:36 It's also on The Man Who Was Too Drunk bootleg compliation thingy. I think it is Frank with a band who is NOT the Catholics though - it predates that, I believe.
Was very excited when I first heard it b/c 'I'm Goin' Down' is one of my favorite Springsteen songs.
