Posted - 07/06/2004 : 09:53:59 Does *anyone* (nudge-nudge, wink-wink)know any new information---such as an approximate release date?---about this record? I've poked around here and found very little since its completion was first announced. In the past few months, it seems to have fallen through the cracks completely---eclipsed by news about that FBF project and the reunion. Part of me expected it would be out sometime this year, since that seemed to make the most sense from a marketing stand-point, what with the reunion and FB enjoying time in the limelight. |

Posted - 07/08/2004 : 00:21:25 just backing up Jose Jones and billgoodman's posts here...
if you look at the back of a Frank Black and the Catholics CD you'll see the copyright is owned by Frank Black and the release is "under exclusive license to spinart records" (US release, of course). and the point is even emphasized further by noting "The copyright in this sound recording is owned by Frank Black". I guess he's proud of that.
So it looks like Frank doesn't have any obligations to any labels. Frank and his collaboraters independently produce a record (without being contracted by a label to do so, and with Frank's own money probably) and then Frank takes it to Label X who releases and markets it. And if Label X doesn't want to put it out (or doesn't agree with Frank's terms), he can just take it to Label Y without owing anything to Label X.
Spinart and Cooking Vinyl have been the "go to" labels in recent years and maybe they WILL put out HONEYCOMB, but options are always open and nothing's set in stone.
You know what might be cool? On the Pixies board, some folks say that they've been told a new Pixies album has already been completed. And, while I'm not really believing that right now (just out of a healthy suspicion toward internet posts from fans), if it's true, it might be nice if that and HONEYCOMB came out on the same day. Sorta like the simultaneous Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh solo album releases a few years ago.
That probably WON'T happen, but it's a neat idea (at least from my sad fanboy point of view). |

Posted - 07/07/2004 : 09:35:24 i'm pretty sure frank releases each album without actually being signed to a label. that way he can release them all he wants and in his own time frame. it seems that SpinArt simply accomodates him best when he wants tp put something out.
i may be mistaken.

Posted - 07/07/2004 : 06:35:02 Can't it just be bashed out as an iTunes release (no label so more money for Frank et al) and bugger then non-Americans/Brits/French/Germans? ;p
Or at least leaked months before its release instead...

Thanks Jon. You're always welcome here.
Do you mean our idol is searching for a new label?...

I thought the same thing at first, but any press and promotion Frank does this year will be all about the Pixies. It's all anyone would want to talk about. Particularly since the Pixies already aren't doing interviews, leaving the press still wanting. So he can't do interviews and he can't tour the new material.
HONEYCOMB would likely fall clear through the cracks this year, no matter how good it might be. Putting it off until early next year makes a lot of sense. It's for the best. |
