After soem recent meet ups with various board members, I was shocked to find a lot of them would actually still rate Pixies over Frank Black.

Was wondering if there is anyone on here who prefers Frank over the Pixies???

Just thought I'd throw that in there...

I love FB in all his forms, but the Pixies changed my life.

The music and musicianship may be better, and the shows are great, but I don't think in 10 years anyone will be making a documentary about how FB+TC's made them want to start a band.

I you were coming of age in the late 80's and were into good music, the Pixies will always have a special place in the heart.

However, up till the recent reunion phenomena that I listen to way more FB+TC's records than Pixies, so maybe I am more of a fan of FB than Pixies. Hard to say. It's all pretty darn good music.

Sure you don't like the Pixies, Nimrod's Son. I understand Surfer Rosa, LevitateMe234, and WannaGrowUpToBeADebaser721 don't like the Pixies either.

Kidding.

I like Frank Black's solo work FAR more than the Pixies. Actually, come to think of it, I don't like the Pixies very much at all (with the exception of most of the Bossanova and Trompe songs). Well, I like them, but there are tons of bands I would rather listen to.

re:have you been to any of the reunions gigs?

no, but ive heard what's floating around in mp3 form and from the setlists ive read i am not impressed by a majority of the songs they are playing at shows...

i have had a few friends that have taken in some of the early shows on the west coast and while the best review i had was "neat" and all of them give props for taking the time to actually play well what they did play...the emotion/feel of the songs they did fell flat across the board from all my boys and they were totally unimpressed by the selection of songs they did (lot of the stuff off early recordings and of course the "standards"...we're more bossanova/trompe types)

i have no plans on seeing them, and that's before they even set foot on a reunion tour...seen them already...been there, done that...

please realize...i am NOT calling it crap...but i am far from impressed with a lot of setlists ive seen and my fellow musicians and friends, while they generally enjoyed the shows, arent telling me this is a "must see"

they did do one thing that deserves respect for a reunion show that a lot of reunion bands dont take seriously...practice what they are actually gonna play out. mad props for that.

When listing my favorite bands, I always list Frank and the Pixies together, but I'd probably put Frank a little higher if I were forced to rank one over the other. I don't know enough by the Breeders to know where I'd rank them.

just to say... from the meetups i was actually on mel's side and getting outnumbered... my personal preference goes like this...

1. frank black
2. pixies
3. breeders

I guess the best way to look at it is, its all CT, its all good, so well done people. If I had to choose, I'd say Pixies first, I spose they're my all time favourite band. Maybe FB solo second, Catholics third.
That sounds ridiculous though, like they're low down the list. Its really not like that at all - they're amazing. They all are...

I'm all about the genius that is Charles Thompson v. 4.

While I look forward to seeing the Pixies later this fall, I live in fear that the Catholics won't get back together. Then I get my brain together and go on with my day. Can't let fear rule ya.

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

If this were a deserted island question, I would bring along more of his post Pixies albums. Having said that, however I'm very much looking forward to my 3 show, dead-head type trek across the midwest in November to see the Pixies. In my heart of hearts however, I'd be even more exited if he was playing solo, or with the Catholics.

Also, I can't wait for Honeycomb.

Wow, what a misleading thread title!

Anyway, I probably like Frank solo or with the Catholics a little bit better on average, although, if I were to rank all of Frank's songs, some Pixies stuff would probably be at the top. I prefer to see it as all one package, I guess. But yeah, I suppose I could say I'm more of a Frank fan than a Pixies fan. I got into Frank first as well, which is probably kind of unusual.

Frank over the Pixies any time. I do think of them as Frank's first backing band, just part of the man's evolution. All of his solo stuff, and with the Catholics is unparalleled. Love that Frank.
Jose Jones Posted - 07/07/2004 : 09:43:21
i like FB better than pixies, but i too am simply in love with the man's art. pixies, then fb, then catholics- it's all amazing.

i think 'trompe le monde' is one of his greatest achievements.

Im not denying that I got in to FB via the Pixies. And I still LOVE the pixies (am listening to them right now).

I just feel theres alot in franks music that the pixies could never have achieved.

Just thought I'd throw that in there...
mike Posted - 07/07/2004 : 03:10:48
the first three FB-records are so great, with more dynamics than the pixies stuff, but listening to his new stuff is not THAT exciting than to listening to the pixies -tunes. !!!??? !!! so maybe, let me whispering this: is the man gettting old?

have you been to any of the reunions gigs?

but i was always a pixies fan before i was a frank black fan, and i'd still class myself in such a manner.
the pixies released 4.5 A+++ albums whereas while frank had released many more albums, the quality is not as consistently high....
i'd say 2A+++, 2A+ and some straglers.

however in saying that i am more excited about the new frank album than i am about a new pixies one.

that should get mel and bumble nice and riled up....hohoho.

To me any Frank is good Frank. Whether it be with The Pixies, by himself, or with The Catholics I don't care. As long as I get my Frank fix somehow I'm fine. I don't pick The Pixies over Frank or Frank over The Pixies. It's all good homie, it's all good.

Bam-thwok a novelty...holy shit what a horrible song...sounds like a rejected Breeders B-side

that said, i dunno what's up with all the recent pixies love besides the spur of the moment...most of these reunion gigs so far theyre playing the most simple songs of their back catalogue with only a few variations between gigs. like a lotta reunions, 'uninspired' leaps to mind.

i've always considered the pixies as frank's first backing band. so i guess i'll take frank with or without the people that backed him through his career.

FB no question.
The man evolves with great music every release. The Catholics are superior musicians. Although, overall, I'm just a Black Francis/Frank Black fan. It's all good.

1. I am a fsh with no i's.
2. You must be wearing Zubaz, 'cause you're daring to be different.
3. I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb.

Its all FB to me. Pixies, Catholics, whatever.

Thats why Bam-thwok is just a novelty. The Pixies havent put out a new song until Charles writes one. Its that simple. And I hope they dont put out another song until Charles says to himself "man, the song I wrote between breakfast and lunch is really a Pixies song! No, not the one after the bagel, the one before the 2nd cup of coffee..."

He is a transcendent talent.

I do like Frank a bit more than the PIXIES...but let us NOT forget without Black Francis, there'd be no Frank Black.

I put Pistolero in and suddenly I am convinced that this is the real deal, that no Pixies record could ever come close. Then I listen to Bossanova and it is the exact opposite.

Only a genius could make me think like that. To choose my favourite album would be like choosing my favourite child.

Here's a playlist that could easily compete with any Frank Black CD:

1. Space (I Believe In)
2. The Sad Punk
3. The Happening
4. Havalina
5. Motorway to Roswell
6. River Euphrates
7. Dead
8. I Bleed
9. Nimrod's Son (Actually, now that I think about it..it kinda has that FB and the C's "vibe", if you will.)
10. Rock Music
11. Subbacultcha
12. Hey
13. There Goes My Gun
14. The Navajo Know (I'm sure many will dissagree, but I find this song great. And very sexy for some reason. Joey's guitar, I think.)
15. All Over the World

I 100% agree with that theorem, Crouty.

(To show the work) I was a big fan of the Pixies since '89, but Frank's solo and Catholics work were what inspired me find to out more about the man and his brain, and inevitably glued me to this fine site. There are worse forms of addiction I suppose.

Frank Black > Pixies

He can be better, but sometimes the Pixies are just as good.

Frank Black and FB&C would have to be the second best musician/music group ever. The first best being the PIXIES.
