Ok, guitar solos may not be the main reason why you listen to Frank Blac k, but there still exists some mind blowers that fit nicely a couple songs. For me, I can rock out to I Need Peace pretty thoroughly, I like it more than Solid Gold's solo. Anybody got any to add? |

Another nice one is Man of Steel. Maybe not exactly a "guitar solo" but theres some nice guitar work in that song, especially at the end. |

I just checked the John Henry liner notes, and Quine apparently plays the guitar solos in "Sleeping In The Flowers" and "No One Knows My Plan."

Yeah what junkmale said, that's the guy. What TMBG songs does he play on, I'd like to hear them. Almost every solo he has on Richard Hell and the Voidoids Blank Generation is amazing.

Yeah, it is. Quine is a interesting guy. He began in Richard Hell's band in the seventies and did a couple of Lou Reed albums and lodds of other stuff. He has a really angular style. A bit like Rich Gilbert.
In the sixties he was a Velvet Underground fanatic and bootlegged many of their shows. Some of them have recently been officialy released as the Bootleg Series

I like Lyle and Rich Gilbert's solos, but since the last tour I am more and more enamoured with Dave Phillips' playing. At teh Shepherds Bush gig it was Dave that really stood out. The solo on New House of the Pope is amazing.

My favorite guitar leads are Lyle's on Steak N Sabre. That one's a definite for panning to the right channel. I'm also partial to the lead work on The Scene (to me, that one sounds like Workman, too). |

The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb. Can't get enough of that Lyle. Although I have great respect and admiration for all former and present guitarists selected by Frank, I find Lyle to be by far the most satisfying lead player for Frank's material. I also agree with Spartacus regarding the lead solo for "This Old Heartache". That one gives me goosebumps !!!!! |

The solo that sticks out to me the most is the amazing Rob Quine type lead stuff on "How You Went So Far" the first break especially gives me goosebumps. Could have to do with the fact that I think Rob Quine is best lead guitarist ever and this seems to be like the best solo that he could have come up with but didn't.

Lyle and FB are the only guitarists listed on Oddballs. To me it sounds like Lyle, was there a special uncredited guest??

Whatever you make of the playing, you'll have to agree that Rich Gilbert is the actual coolest person in the world. No doubt about it.

I agree with Avid-Fan; "Out of State" is very nice.
There are some great guitar solos during the "Los Angeles" of the Nadine LIVE EP which I like very much and consider superior to the studio version (on the other hand, the studio version is longer and has more contrast between the parts; not to mention all those fantastic keyboards).
"1826" has some nice solos as well. |

Dave Phillips!!!
He's the one with the melody I prefer.
It's slower than Rich, which I like, fits in the more melancholic songs from the last four albums.
It's not as 'cold' as Lyle. Don't know how to explain that, but to me Dave is the right person for the music CT makes for the last few years.

I might be wrong, but as I recall from the last FB and the C's gig he played the How you went so far-solo. All these tiny solos have so much melody in it, it's a pity I can't figure them out on my guitar.
Other solos:
-Solid gold
No explanation neccesary
-I've seen your picture
-Coastline
The solo after the first chorus is just so 'right', adds an extra 'atmosphere' to the song. Am I making this clear? guess not

I think he's great. A really nice guy too.
Not that Lyle or Dave are not, I just like Rich the most. I do like Dave's pink floral Telecaster though.

I find Lyle's solo's on Cult of Ray almost irritating
my faves are Tiny Heart and I love your brain solo's

i like what i'm hearing, heres some others i like
out of state - my fav song on devil's workshop, but it ends the song nicely, its a great song, and one of frank's best vocals
st francis dam disaster- ok, its not the longest, but i like how it ends the song, becuase the song keeps building to that point, you just get this image of water wiping out towns (esepcially for me, im from johnstown,pa if you know what thats about).
1826-you know what, i dont think a lot may like this song, but when driving home 2 am from college, hopped up on cafenine pills, speeding down the highway, the song starts to sound real good, im rocking out pretty hard by the end
