In the recent GQ interview Frank's music with the Catholics was refered to as "Cowboy Punk" if I am not mistaken. "Cowboy Punk". I actually think that's a great phrase to describe his music and I would love to see it elaborated on in a more traditional punk fashion. I do love the Country Western twang that flows so nicely through his songs and would want to keep that aspect of the music as well. Now maybe this is because one of my fav songs is Thalassocracy. It's short, fast, loud and awesome. I would love to see Frank and the Catholics write an album of all songs that are between 30 seconds and 1 minute long. Throw about 30 to 40 songs on one album and just let them fly through them all one after another like a rapid attack of Thalassocracy's and Angst's. Good idea? Bad idea?

i think that the idea would be cool if he did more short songs, but a whole album's worth might rub people the wrong way. for instance, i have friends who just can't get into the minutemen b/c of the brevity of their songs. people expect a certain length from most songs, just so that the melody can stay in their heads. think of "hey jude" for a minute - over three minutes of the outro - but can you listen to that song and NOT hum "la la la hey jude" - no, because the melody is imprinted in your head. not that all songs should be that way, however a certain ammount of repetition is needed for many listeners. personally, i'd dig an all shorts record as a cool little excersize.

Do you mean the CD itself would be thought of as filler, or the individual songs would? I can kind of see the former, but not the latter, unless there's some meaning of "filler" of which I'm not aware.

Wow, that idea seemed to go over well with you guys. Makes me happy because I was afraid it wouldn't. I do think it would be seen as filler. If Frank is capable of writing little ditty's, either stories with lyrics or just simple instrumentals that take you on a fast paced journey through the disc, it would awesome. He records everyhting live and some of the seesions are only a few days. He could crank this out in no time.

Well, if Frank could do something like alien lanes
I'll be up for it

See now, if I still had the energy to pogo like a goodun at the front of the crowd I'd probably be up for that. I'd go for a series of surf epics - TOTY styly but 12 - 13 mins, get Eric to do his stuff all over it...bliss

Yes, I'm familiar with that comp. A few of my friends who are into that punk/ska stuff have it. The Blink 182 track, "Family Reunion", is particularly interesting...

When TMBG plays "Fingertips" live, John Flansburgh almost always gets "I heard a sound" wrong.

Well, if they want to stick to the country-ish theme, maybe they can cover "something grabbed a hold of my hand."

I've heard of "Cowpunk", along the lines of Rank'n'File.

I think an album full of short songs would be a cool idea. (Didn't the Residents do something of the sort, with an album where every song was exactly one minute long?) I don't know that critics would say it's "full of filler" if EVERY song is short, unless they're really stupid. Of course, it IS music critics we're talking about here.

I love short songs, but not an album full of them. I could only listen to GBV's "Alien Lanes" just so often before I felt cheated.
billgoodman Posted - 05/20/2004 : 12:28:43
well, it's a good idea
but lots of critics
and maybe some fans too
would call it full of filler
