whilst not quite as good as the pixies albums, franks solo albums are all proper bo. why does he wish to write songs like "i'll be blue" though? surely everyone would rather be listening to another letter to memphis or something. if we wanted crusty piano ballads we'd buy a phil collins cd.

She sure did. And Frank sings and plays on it too. Who'd have thought hey, after all these years. The star crossed lovers back together again.

why do you all start crying when someone says something slightly negative about him?

probably because you castigated Ill be blue in reference to Phil Collins.

I agree with Samurai's second post, he wasn't overly harsh and is allowed to express his opinions, let's not get all riled up (Don't Ya Rile Em).

But, that said, I respectfully quite disagree with his first post. I like that Frank isn't afraid to try different things and I also enjoy I'll Be Blue quite a bit as a song. Do you really want song after song of the same thing? I guess maybe the bigger question is, do you want to support an "artist" who only makes what he thinks is popular or will sell or an artist who is, in fact, an artist?

Anyway, the guy didn't come on here and just say "FB solo sucks" so let's try to cut him some slack and/or have a discussion instead of responding to potential flamebait. Suicide Samurai, do you like some of the earlier FB solo stuff or other tracks on DITS (like Robert Onion, Bullet, etc?)

What I've heard, as each album graced our ears, Franks writing has matured so much. He seems to be more personal in his songs now, and as a nearly 40 year old man, he must have been through alot of ups and downs in his life. It would be hard not to be influenced by these things. I love the personal Frank myself. i'll be blue too.

I understand why we haven't got a 'Letter 2', but the Man's full of surprises. Who'd have thought we'd hear him do a song like Bam Thwok after all these years and Manitoba. You never know.

why am i on here if im not a Frank Black fan? well i quite obviously am one but i just think he wrote his best songs with the pixies. why do you all start crying when someone says something slightly negative about him? and when i said "another Letter To Memphis" i didnt mean just record the same song again i meant it in the same way people say "We need another Stairway To Heaven" or something like that.

Which are even better...

Artists have to evolve too. He'll get bored himself if he keeps making the same album. I think he does a great job of variation considering how many albums he has put out.

I love the Pixies and I discovered them first, but quite frankly I'd take the Catholics any day.

Got coffee, got donuts, got wasted..

The day after seeing the Boise show I listened to the live disc from DTTP for the sake of comparison and was amazed at how closely they compared from the standpoint of intent and execution. Immediately after that I listened to all of a 77 min compilation I made from BLD, DW, and SMYT, and enjoyed it much more than I had the Pixies disc. Of course this doesn't prove anything, but it is consistent with the feeling I had when watching that wonderful reunion show that the older music is dead. Frank has moved way beyond what he was doing fifteen years ago. It's not as though the reunion tour is a matter of going through the motions. Hardly. The shows were great a fun and an honor to attend. But it's over. Hearing those old Pixies tunes made me realize just how lucky we are to have the Catholics playing some of the same material. When the Catholics play the Pixies it's as though the songs have been resurrected. Can't say I feel the same about the reunion tour. That said, nothing can keep me from those two September Berkeley shows.

It's always refreshing to see a FB-related post that isn't 99% biased. Nonetheless, I'll Be Blue is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

i agree with sam...and the people who agree with him.
even if you dont like frank black you dont have to go
dissing his songs. keep your opinions about frank black
to yourself....exspecialy if your on a fb forum.
what i dont get is why your on here in the first place?

Personal taste is a reply to your inane post. One mans dirt is anothers gold or some shit like that, as it goes i'll be blue is not one of my faves either, but when your favourite artist is as consistent as FB, the lesser songs (imo) are the songs he writes side by side to songs like i've seen your picture. So quit your whinging ya bastid.

i could not disagree with you any more than i do. i would take 1 "i'll be blue" for about 10 pixies songs. music is all about opinions - its not smart to come somewhere dedicated to FB's solo work and bash it outright.

if you don't like it then just don't buy it...
surely not everyone would rather be listening to another letter to memphis or something - simply for the fact that nobody needs another letter to memphis when there is already one.
