Posted - 04/27/2004 : 18:47:45 Ever noticed that in Lust for Life, Iggy Pop sounds like Frank Black (FB & TCs era)? If you close your eyes and listen, and you'll think it's Frank. From the vocal style to the phrasing. I can hear the influence he had on Mr. Thompson.
Does anyone else have artist that you swear sound alike (aside from all the pop-punk, nu-metal, emo bands out there that goes without saying).

Posted - 05/08/2004 : 15:36:05 When I was a kid and I used to hear Stevie Wonder sing "You are the Sunshine of My Life" I used to think he was doing a duet with a woman. Then, when I heard the Elton John duet he did with Kiki Dee ("Don't Go Breakin My Heart") I thought Elton John was doing both parts.
A little off topic, I know, but related in the sense that you're mistaking one person's voice for someone else's. Also, when John Cougar broke on the scene, I was dying for the new Springsteen album to come out. So when I heard "Jack and Diane," I wishfully thought it was a Springsteen song.

Along the lines of your example, I think Frank sounds kind of like Mark Knopfler in "Calistan." Some reviewer pointed out "The Creature Crawling" as another example of this, although I can't see that one as much. Not THAT close in either case, but close enough that people made the comparison.

That's creepy. When I got that CD I was listening to it in the car with my dad and he said "He sounds like Mark Knopfler in this song." hehe, I also share the same birthday with Mr. Knopfler...oh if only I could sing... |

Really? This sounds more like a post for the Pixies section. I love Joey Santiago as much as the next Pixies fanatic, but no one's talkin about Joey here...

Frank Black/Iggy Pop--I especially think this on the song Massif Centrale, which even has Iggy Pop style lyrics (the rhyming) and bass
Ade Blackburne of Clinic sounds like a mix of COP Frank, Perry Farrel, and young Gordan Gano
Tom Waites sounds like Captain Beefheart
Kim Gordan when she's screaming sounds Jarboe when she's screaming
Connor Obrst from Bright Eyes sounds like Lou Barlow
The guy from the Decemberists sounds exactly like Jeff Mangum and Eugene Kelley
Bob Pollard sounds like Paul Mcartney mixed with Roger Daltry
Elliot Smith sounds like Nick Drake
David Byrne sounds like ROBIN WILLIAMS! especially on "Animals"
The guy from Suicide sounds like a coked out Elvis
the guy from Sigur Ros recently sounds exactly like Thom Yorke
the guy from Vines tries to sound like Kurt Cobain
the guy from the Liars sounds like the guy from Gang of Four
Every shitty emo band sounds like Mac from Superchunk

Posted - 04/30/2004 : 22:09:55 Agree with johndietzel about the Mick Jagger thing on "I've Seen Your Picture."
Also the vocals in "Suffering" have always struck me as an obvious tribute to Roger Daltrey. |

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 23:26:38 I always thought the following "artists" were the same person:
Taylor Dayne Anita Baker Cher Michael Bolton Rick Astley Michael McDonald
To understand this, you might have to hear my evidentiary morph-singing routine, with each of these people singing each other's songs.
Another thing that's fun is to sing any song as if you're Eddie Vedder or Morrissey. Try swapping the vocals on songs.
Others: Frank IS Mick J in stuff like "Heloise" and "Bartholomew" and "I've Seen Your Picture." Chuck D and Marv Albert. Gordon Gano sounds like young Lou Reed. Jimi Hendrix sang a lot like John Lee Hooker. The Housemartins/Beautiful South guy and Morrissey. J Mascis and William Hung. Billy Joel (seemed to try to sound like) Paul McArtney, in the olden times. Then there's that band called _________ whose singer sounded just like Eddie Vedder. Neil Young and a whipoorwhil (how you spell?) sound the same. ;) Tommy the Cat in "Tommy the Cat" sounds like Tom Waits. 88 Keys in Dick Tracy sounds like Mandy Patinkin. Mel Blanc and his son don't sound the same. I was among those Billy Idol fans back when the Breakfast Club came out, and I thought that song was his at first.

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 14:44:40 Darkoutsider, that's very true. I was listening to Lust for Life today and thought the same thing. Although I was somewhat distracted by Frank's anecdote about him dancing naked to that song. Yep. Hmmm. Right...
