Posted - 04/07/2004 : 14:01:30 Thatīs a trouble. What a question! I was studing about the name and found so many meanings for Eddie like El niņo (kinda hurricane), turbation, guardian of treasures and, at last, i canīt find the histerical (historical) Eddie you are talking about. But i am curious to know what the music talk or complains about. I listen to it when i was 12 or 13 years old and i couldnīt find a meaning in a so drammatical title, for the general emotional and symbolical perspectives of Frankīs music. Sometimes cruel, in others seeing only the emptiness, the lonelyness and chaos of civilizations with the epic touches, Frank is aways Frank and his music is free and spontaneous like hymns.

Posted - 11/11/2005 : 17:08:28 Strange, I knew it was about a girl he knew in LA who rode around on her bike, and I assumed she had died. In either case, it does seem a bit tasteless, I don't know how he intended this.

Ed is Dead is about a strange girl Charles knew when he was growing up she was "slow", and kids made fun of her, and she would ride around on her bike with a little radio tied to the handle bars, "with music on her bars", etc...
There was no car crash thing or anything like that.
and the chorus "ed is dead" has nothing to do with the rest of it, Charles just thought it sounded cool there. Thats how he would write songs back then to the amazement of his peers.
Its in the new book. Lots a stuff like that. So thats the Ed Is Dead story and the non meaning of "ed is dead"
FYI.

Posted - 11/02/2005 : 10:18:32 At a couple of Pixies reunion shows I caught this summer and fall, Frank mentioned it's about a girl he used to know.
When we walked through Little Italy I saw my reflection come right off your face I paint pictures to remember, you're too beautiful to put into words

Posted - 10/28/2005 : 18:21:58 Eddie might be Edie Sedgwick, Warhol's model/actress back in 60's, one that overloaded on drugs and died in 1971. After the split with Warhol she returned home to Santa Barbara and overdosed, months after acting in an odd movie which became a document about her decline (Ciao! Manhattan). Just a guess... Also, Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and a few other songs are said to be about her. |

That's pretty funny.

Posted - 04/08/2004 : 17:48:55 there isn't an actual official story, but it was discussed quite a bit in another thread some time ago. before, simply because at first glance the chorus and the verses had nothing to do with each other, i didn't think it would have a meaning, just a bunch of random coolness. but really, if you just take ed as edwina, a girls name, it's all quite blatant.
Her head is in a bitter way Her brain's on fire She's just looking for the perfect wave It's her brain's desire I think of her when I walk the strand On this true hermosa night Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah
She's just riding in stupid bliss With music on her bars Her face burning in the LA sun She got no, got no fear of cars I'll dedicate my strand cruiser to the memory of own
I think someone pointed out that the strand referred to where frank lived when eh was younger, or something, so this was a local girl. the second verse, you can see that this girl is riding about not paying much attention to cars. one day she was sadly hit by a car and died, it was in the local news, or frank knew her, and he wrote a song about her. but confused millions of people by calling her ed.
i can't see how this could be far from the truth.

Posted - 04/08/2004 : 11:43:00 I've always wondered what many Pixies songs are about. Through the virtue of this forum and the internet in general, the questions have been answered for me. For the most.
I still have no idea who/what Ed Is Dead is about...so, like mr. grieves, I'd like to hear people's takes on it. Or better yet, a definitive answer (but I'm not getting my hopes up) |

He does say "she" so Edwina would make sense.
Where did you here this? Is there an actual story behind Ed is Dead? |
