Posted - 04/02/2004 : 06:51:33 So about a week ago or so, I walked down to the corner party store, which is a very college-oriented place, both employee-wise as well as clientele (jeez, is that how it's spelled?). So I walk into the door and expect to hear mainstream rap music or classic rock, which is all that's ever played in there. Almost always rap music. Instead, I hear some nice synths and guitars, and it seems really familiar. Then it hits me: HANG ON TO YOUR EGO!!! Whoa. It blew my mind. I'm figuring the guy behind the counter is a big FB fan, so when I walked up to pay for my beer or whatever I had, I say, "Wow, I didn't expect to hear Frank Black playing in here." And he just says, "Oh yeah, got lots of music here." And I go on about how awesome it is to hear something different, to hear Frank Black, thinking this guy is a fan, and he says, "Dude, it just happens to be what was playing on the radio." It shocked me. Hang On To Your Ego on the radio? And what song comes on right then, right when the song ends? Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn." What was Hang On To Your Ego doing playing on a station that plays that song, too? It was trippy, surreal.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 18:17:25 That's cool that you wrote the show and they aired your suggestion!
About all I have, is hearing La la love you in a really crappy bar one night, having a crappy time, because everyone in that place is a dick, listening to crappy music, then the Pixies come blasting on and it was kind of nice. But of course it's a rather short song, so after that everything went back to being crappy.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 13:37:12 We here in Chicago have a local tv show called "Stooge-a-palooza" which runs 3 Stooges shorts unedited and uninterrupted. The host (Rich Koz) usually includes Stooge trivia and such, and asked if anyone out in TV land had heard any songs written about the 3 Stooges. Well, you know I had to e-mail him and turn him on to "Two Reelers" from TOTY. To my surprise, on the show the next week, my e-mail was read, which include Frank's clever lyrics and obvious love of the Stooges. While it was read, they put up a graphic of the CD cover photo. It was fun to get mentioned, but even better to get Frank some free publicity! Love SEEING Frank when you least expect it. |

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 11:59:14 I used to work at a Sunglass Hut inline store, not a kiosk. I used to have to be careful what I played over the stereo but It was usually always Frank Black, or Archers of Loaf. I even had him playing one day and a female customer commented on how true Headche sounded. |

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 10:17:53 Same thing happened to me once. I was passing outside an Irish Pub, that usually plays all kind of mainstream rock music, when i heard "Blast Off" playing inside. I immediately went to the guy that worked there to compliment him for the excellent music taste, but he replied that he didn't choose the music, it was just the 50cd changer they had and the cd's were random stuff they get for free. Yet another dissapointment.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 07:08:10 On the mainstream radio? That IS crazy!
I'm putting together a mix for an outdoor patio here in Saskatoon. There's about 48 hours of music and I try to mix mainstream garbage (which most people want) with indie/good tracks from lots of different artists, as well as different genres (I don't consider indie a genre, incidentally - just a reflection of ethics). Anyway, I'm sure there'll be some people pleasantly surprised as you were, others that have no idea what they're listening to, and others still that might be a little turned off, but I'll definitely be happy for a break from the dreck when I'm sitting out there this summer with a Corona watching the traffic below (and the ladies all around).
