What is the distortion mic that FB uses on stage? Megaphone? CB? Particularaly the one he uses for the Japanese TV special from their (PIXIES) show at Brixton Academy 1991.
Bonus question...How does he get it not to feedback?
Does anyone know?
Thanks
Jake

You folks are amazing...thanks so much for your help. I'm going to play around with these concepts.

Thanks again...

kim uses an ambient drone microphone with the breeders (in canonball for instance) which has somewhat of the same sound.

It's the handheld mic from a CB radio duct-taped to a stand. I believe the cord was modified to end in a 1/4" jack and used as a line input. It was most likely highly compressed and EQ'd to avoid feeedback, but the more likely reason is because since there was another high-quality mic right beside it, they didn't put the CB mic through the monitor much and Black Francis was able to get enough bleed from the main vocal mic to hear what was going on.

Hope this helps.
