These are my two favorite pop artists : the most inventive distorted pop composer and the most eloquent lyricist in the world. They were the two major artist of a decade, and pretty much influence everything today.

In my opinion, they didn't only revolution the music, they created their own universe, and today, you can paint a Frank Black influenced picture, you can write a Smiths influenced novel, etc.

Their cooperation project was aborted after Frank made a declaration about Morissey's solo work in a newspaper. On the other hand, Frank has publicly apologized, and I'm pretty sure these two artists have much respect for each other's work.

Both of these artists are pretty much in the same situation (a former band etc), and I think that their fans are pretty similar (I am the living sign). If you use economic definitions (that's what I study) you would say there are many synergies to explore through a merger.

My point is : these two guys will probably never contact each other to work together. They're not the kind of guys who will hold hands in front of the crowd on a Charity concert.

Soooo?

Well, I'm pretty sure we can do something about it on this forum (which is a very good forum). Don't misunderstand me, I like the Catholics, and I like the current FB solo work, so I don't want him to quit. But this cooperation could really be something nice. I don't know if you other guys (and girls) agree, but it would be a true pity to stop everything because of a stupid declaration.

What is Ken Goes doing? Pixies reunion = easy cash flows, that's OK with me. The Frank/Morissey project is riskier, but it can also be profitable, and I think that it's an initiative that every decent music lover will be enthusiastic about (er, is my English correct here?).

Come on guys, let's make this happen.

Have some wine, please, don't run away.

I think a collaboration could be interesting. One of those alchemistic experiments ... will it explode? Will it yield gold?

The pair actually have some things in common musically, if not personally. Listen to "Honeycomb" and "You Are The Quarry" back-to-back. Little similarities in the accents, in the song structures. I have no idea who would write the lyrics. Maybe they could re-cover "Hermaphroditos" or "I Have Forgiven Jesus?" A stoic and a drama queen? Opposites attracting?

Anyway, never say never ..

I saw Morrissey live on Monday night! and it was great, his bands great, he's still sharp and he played a fair few Smiths songs, i mean he opened with "How Soon is Now"! how cool is that!. But although i like Morrissey's solo and his work with the Smiths i would be interested to hear what him and Frank could do but i really dont know how they would do it or if it would be any use.

German festival in the mountains in the spring on the shores of the most beautiful dead river I've ever seen. Someone in the audience throws an iron bar on stage. Later we're told it could be a German sign of affection. Hope it affects someone else next time. Lots of good bands like those Sugarcubes. The other half of the PA gets turned on when The Cure hit the stage, but what the heck. They sold the tickets and it sounds great. Afterwards, the promoter gives all the bands a rock encased in plastic that has "The Cure'" printed on it. Someone also gives me one of those reversible Morrissey tour jackets. I look rained on and trodden, yet sharp. I would duet with that guy in a second. No lie.

That's from 1989. Does anyone have the orginal article Charles mentions where he talks shit about Morrissey? I haven't been able to track it down.

Heh, I was just going to say that Frank would have to write the lyrics. Although I lurve Morissey some of his solo work lyrics are pretty silly.

What did Jesus ever do to him?

The video is good, though.

He appears to have forgiven Jesus though, apparently. Which is magnanimous of the man.

To the person who said Morissey is a singer, and not jesus - thats exactly how i feel about him. He's way too 'up himself' for my liking

I'd rather Frank(or Pixies)/PJ Harvey

Frank/Morissey : wouldn't it be nice ?

Nope.

Don't like his voice, it seems to be the same on every song I've heard but I haven't heard that many because I don't like his voice.
So I'll shut up. Zip.

I loooove CEMETERY GATES. What about solo Morrissey? I really love THE MORE YOU IGNORE ME, THE CLOSER I GET and EVERYDAY IS LIKE SUNDAY. Also how can you resist HAIRDRESSER ON FIRE? I think I am going to put VIVA HATE on right now.
Adnan_le_Terrible Posted - 03/28/2004 : 00:54:36
Winnie, I like Frankly Mr. Shankly pretty much, but I really don't know which one is my favorite. Probably "This charming man" or "What difference does it make?".

One of the funniest is "Vicar in a tutu", as well as "Cemetery Gates". "Queen is dead" is funny as well (you should hear me play piano), and so many others.

For all of you who aren't very familiar with the Smiths, check out the compilation albums Louder Than Bombs or Singles. At least listen to There is a Light that Never Goes Out. I guarantee you'll at least like it. In the world of rock gods, I'd put Morrissey just below Frank Black. (But a collaboration would be f'd up)
Adrian: what's your favorite Smiths song? I like Frankly Mr. Shankly (the lyrics always make me laugh)

Even in "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" (maybe "Meaven" needs to be worked into the Culf of Buttoms somehow), I'd say the line "Why do I give valuable time to people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?" is pretty humorous.

Join the Culf of Buttoms / Correctly spelled cults are so passé.

Well the fact that they're different isn't necessarily an obstacle, is it? The fact that Frank was enthusiastic about that cooperation proves that they have things in common. Once again, I'm not talking about Morissey's and Frank's music, not their personalities.

Is Morrisey still releasing new recordings or just like the old days re-releasing the same songs on different records?
Joel kilbride Posted - 03/26/2004 : 19:42:18
I would love to see this combo. I have not followed morrisey in years but he was a favorite when i was younger. It seems that FB has done all he can to repair that one.

This summer I must go to the Hultsfred festival again...Pixies and Morrisey playing in Sweden at the same time and place...too good to be true almost...I had a vision: (there wasn't any television)..just my own vision of Morrisey joining Frank and the Pixies on stage singing the lead of Debaser...that would be jävligt coolt (good fun) as we say in Svedala..
I think of Morrisey in sunglasses going "Got me a movie o ha ha ha"...hehehe

Actually, the Frank B-side 'Announcement' has very Morrisey-ish vocals; I wonder is it meant as a pastiche or if Frank wrote it with Morrissey in mind.

Although Frank could do a Pin-Ups type album a la Bowie...

My album might look like this (keeping it mainstream):

The Smiths: There Is A Light
David Bowie: Teenage Wildlife
Bob Dylan: One More Cup Of Coffee For The Road
Iggy Pop: Five Foot One
The Rolling Stones: As Tears Go By
The Beatles: Helter Skelter
Leonard Cohen: Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
Roxy Music: Prairie Rose
T-Rex: Cosmic Dancer

I saw Morrissey play last year and he did "Meat Is Murder". I think he's a national treasure, but I can't see any mileage at all in a collaboration with FB.

"There is a light that never goes out" is a depressive AND funny song ("if a double decker bus crashes into us to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"). I think that with humour everything is OK. I hate Radiohead or Jeff Buckley, because they keep whining but they have no distance between them and what they're singing, like Morissey has.

Once again, I understand that it must be different in the UK, but here in France we just consider Morissey as a musician that he really is.

Rémi, you should really try the Smiths. I hate Les Inrocks as well, they're just a bunch of assholes full of shit. For heaven's sake, they live in Brighton!!!

I was a big Smiths fan. Meat is Murder is a good newbie album to listen to. Its catchy, easy going music. The hamburger ban makes sense, though it would be weird for them to do that particular song live.
