hi im new to this forum but have been a FB and Pixies fan for years, anyhoo imlooking to expand my FB collection and was wondering what ppl rate as their fave FB albums.
so far im besotted with dog in the sand and teenager of the year mainly, what about you guys?

Jn, I never really cared for Brackish Boy too much. It's very catchy, but I really dislike those sound effects; they, in my personal humble opinion, get in the way of the song. |

TOTY is just as good as it gets. I never get sick of it. I like FB in a highly produced setting. And is there a bad song on there? I ask you!
The two track stuff sounds weak and I've never ogtten used to the coutry-ish stuff. He still writes good songs, but the ratio is going down, IMO.

FB = Teenager Of The Year (It's like a whole big out pouring of every idea from the Pixies that he never got around to using (even though it's the second solo album, and yet works as a cohesive peice).
FB&Cs = Dog In The Sand is probably the most proficient... but Pistolero is the most fun.

I like TOTY because of the jumbled, awkward sound it has to it from beginning to end. Maybe it was thrown together, maybe it does run on too long for some people's taste (I like a good, long album sometimes, myself..) Some songs are better than others. It's just so zany and wacky...it's very, very odd music. One of my favorite FB songs, Speedy Marie, is on it. The whole album sounds very drug-induced, downright cheesy at times "...lotta people love that Jerome...did you know he missed his comb..?" But it's still great in my opinion. And, if any of it is filler it's damn good for such.
I feel somewhat bad admitting this, but I still to this day don't own Pistolero, Cult of Ray, Dog in the Sand, or Oddballs; all of these albums are down at the Disc Exchange here in Knoxville. I've known about them for a long time, so I really have no excuse. There's just so much good music out there! (I've heard many of the songs from each album.)
As for SMYT, I listen to that, and I'm amazed...Iiiiiiim Amazed....at the fact that it's the same musician that was responsible for the self-titled debut and TOTY. It's so much more mature. I have grown to love it as much as the others, although it doesn't hold the same degree of personal meaning as TOTY and the debut album. (I was a teenager when both of them came out...you know, dealing with all that bullshit teen angst and everything...) But, you know you really love an album when you not only sing along with every word on the disc all the way through but also emulate almost every instrumental noise outside the vocals as well. (Which I've grown to do with nearly all of FB and FB &TC albums I own.)

I'd have to say Pistolero. It's just so crisp, loud, straight forward, and to me kind of like a Pixies record, (sorry, that's truly why I like it so). Plus seeing them on that tour in DC at 930 was the most amazing show. |

Devil's Workshop is my favrite Catholics album. I know the common answer is DITS, but about 8 songs on DW are the best he's ever written (The Scene, San Antonio TX, His Kingly Cave, Out of State, Bartholomew, Fields of Marigold......all come to mind).
It's hard to say what my favrite FB album in general is, though. I love FB, TOTY, and COR. COR is cool becuase it has the widest range of complexity; I mean, COR is an amazingly complex song, The Marsist has got the weirdest chord progressions I've ever heard, You Ain't Me is probably the most straightfoward song he ever wrote prior to SMYT. In terms of production and experimentation, FB or TOTY are much more diverse albums than COR, but there ain't a single 'normal' song on FB; all the tunes showcase a lot of sophisticated, experimental stuff, even "Czar" has got those insane vocals and keyboards and interesting rhythm. COR has more straightfoward songs, but still illustrate the desire to have songs with so many different chords ("The Cult Of Ray") and crazy avant-garde chord progressions ("The Marsist") and songs that sound as though they have a few oddball time-signatures ("I Don't Want To Hurt You (Every Single Time)")

The Pixies appear on a 1991 Leonard Cohen tribute album called "I'm Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen". They do a version of "I Can't Forget". It's pretty good. So I guess Frank is a fan of his.

Also, sorry if this has been a topic already, but has anyone noticed a similarity to Leonard Cohen in This Old Heartache? Apart from the ah-ah-ah's which is very Frank, the use of going from one note and progressively getting deeper reminded me very much of Cohen. I don't know if Frank's a fan of his? Did anyone else notice this? Does he use this method on other albums? thanx |

Yeah, Show me your Tears is really good. I think Dog in the Sand is maybe even better. The other solo stuff is in a different style which I personally don't like as much...
There are still lots of good songs on the other cd's though.
here's my top three: 1 Dog in the sand 2 SMYT 3 Doolittle (pixies)

Rockmusic84- yes, SMYT is my first Frank album. From your message I suppose it isn't as highly regarded? well, I really enjoy it. I requested 'My Favorite Kiss' on KEXP the other day. I love that interview Frank did at that station...especially the version of Mr.Grieves. |

I bought SMYT recently and it has been an incredible experience listening to it.
