Frank Black :: Los Angeles Re-visited
I lost touch with Frank Black's music years ago, but not before his 1993 debut/eponymous solo album. At the time, as a rabid and devout Pixies fan, this album was highly anticipated...and hey, surprise, it wasn't the Pixies sound. But between it and the Breeders' records it was close enough - for awhile anyway.
I haven't thought about this record in over ten years, but while traveling back East a couple of weeks ago the song "Los Angeles" off the LP was playing on the radio which spawned an excellent conversation about just how great the accompanying video was. RE: Frank Black driving a hovercraft through the southern California desert singing about an L.A. in an alternate universe. No one really did space-alien weird quite like Black Francis and this early incarnation of Frank Black.
Watch the video below - check out the MP3 and give Black's spin on The Beach Boys "Hang On To Your Ego" a whirl. It's like it's 1993 all over again. Kinda.

Posted - 12/07/2004 : 12:45:49 Hey Carl, some of us chat Frank, some of us it seems have chatted about Frank for the past few years so don't bother now. If in doubt, there are questions in the archives to be answered. |

Yeah, his solo work ain't that bad is it. Not bad at all.
Pixies/Catholics/solo, whichever FB catergory or pigeon hole I've put you in, you can't neglect the rest. There's just too much too hear. Too much to miss. |

Posted - 03/05/2004 : 07:11:43 I thought it was cool to be handed his two solo efforts and then to walk into a store and say "Hey, here's more Frank Black stuff. With the Catholics?" That was an amazing rediscovery of Frank. Long live the Catholics!!! |

Posted - 03/04/2004 : 15:40:15 I wasn't a Frank or Pixies fan for very long before this forum was created (although I was a fan of Frank solo first), so I can't really say I've had a chance to undiscover and rediscover his music.

Posted - 03/04/2004 : 13:57:14 Two friends of mine like the Pixies and the one pushed Frank Black''s first two solo albums on me about 8 years back, not the Pixies. He helped me discover Frank. I love Frank's solo work, and I can't get enough of the alt country sound he and the Catholics put out. It was up to me to kinda discover the Pixies on my own and I am glad Frank's solo career helped me look back and find them. |
