Random question, at the end of Manitoba, is that female backing vocals you can hear? Certainly sounds like it and checking the album sleeve it does list a couple of female vocalists. do they sing on any other tracks? does anyone know? also, jean black, is that frank's ex wife?

Pietra is the long time partner (musical and domestic) of Stan Ridgway (who produced Manitoba and quite a few others on the album). We all met the night before when FB played a part in Dave Thomas' "MIrror Man" as part of his DIsastodrome extravaganza. Van Dyke was in that show, too. As were Andy (trumpet), Keith (6/8 guitar part) and one of the KIdney Bros. (awesome sax on "The Snake").

What great fortune for Cynthia and I to have met Stan and Pietra who were just about to entertain the notion of having more back-up singers on Manitoba the next day!

Thanks for the kind words about So. Bay. Just last night we talked about maybe doing it in our live set. Does that mean I have to lug the pedal steel outta the house? Hmmm.

Bumble, if you've checked out You Ain't Me, our tribute to FB, the girl (Cynthia Haagens) singing backing vocals on Manitoba appears with her husband, Eric Potter, (who also did some work on Manitoba) on So. Bay. Very tasty. I don't know/haven't spoken with Pietra Wexstun before.

According to Frank, Van Dyke Parks wrote that intro on the spot during practice/recording. He also switches between accordion and piano on that song.

Offerw, I guess you mean Hit The Ground Running and not Let's Move to the Country.

Denis

Yep Denis, you are dead right. Hit the ground running begins with that line "I had to leave the country" which made me choose the wrong song title. I've gone and rectified my mistake.

I'm glad to see a few Smog fans on the board. What do you guys think of those backing vox though. You agree it has the same effect?

I was just about to start a new thread concerning the backing vocals on Manitoba when I came upon your thread bumblebeeboy2.

Those vocals somehow remind me a lot of the backing vocals Bill Callahan used on Hit the ground running, a song from Knock, Knock, Knock (An awesome Smog album). He used a bunch of kids (there is a pic of the girls on the back of the cd) to sing in the background. I see Frank credits Pietra Wexstun, Jean Black, Cynthia Haagens and Eric Potter for additional vocals and it gets very much the same effect as on the Smog album.

The trumpet bit at the beginning of the song also has me guessing. Haven't I heard something like it before? Anyone has any idea?

Female backing vocals, yes. Jean Black his ex, yes. I think that's the only track.
