it's like comparing apples to apples. some like their "Golden Delicious" all squishy...while others like their "Macintosh" crisp as winter. And for some if you eat too much you get a bellyache. Enjoy your apples

Does Frank even submit them for Grammy consideration? I bet he doesn't, I think it was pretty expensive he's on indie labels that probably don't want to shell out. Back when I was a professional musician I was a member of the the Recording Academy I voted in my specialty (classical music), and my dues were over $100 a year, if I recall correctly. Frank doesn't seem the type to spend money nominating something for a pointless award, I don't think he needs that sort of thing to feel validated as an artist.

If you really want to know, look in the Frank

Steely Dan IS popular. Just listen to a classic rock station.

Why wasn't Dog in the Sand nominated for a grammy? Don't say it's all a popularity contest because Steely Dan won a few years ago.

1. Teenager Of The Year

The rest can all fall after this one in whatever order they like.

Franks music seems to hit me in waves depending on my mood. Today, Show Me Your Tears, tomorrow, who knows.
But one things for sure, TOTY is still king.

ok with lots of you : there's how I feel about it at the moment

3.the cult of ray
4.pistolero
5.dog in the sand

9.show me your tears

maybe I am a bit nostalgic of the first FB lps, or maybe I put them ahead of my list cos I've listened to them dozens of times ... so the last ones will have their turn too.

I don't know for you but I divide FB career in several phases :
1st : TOTY + FB
2nd : COR
3rd : FB & Cs + Pistolero + DITS
4th : BLD + DW
5th : SMYT + ....

Frank Black / Teenager of the Decade....
VoVat Posted - 03/04/2004 : 15:32:07
This has been done a zillion times, but here's my current ranking:

1. TOTY--Just an all-around excellent album. One of my favorites by ANY artist.
2. DITS--A VERY close second. Any album with "St. Francis Dam Disaster," "Bullet," AND "If It Takes All Night" is pretty much guaranteed to be great. Well, unless the other tracks are all crap, but they're definitely not here.
3. FB
4. DW
5. BLD--This one took a while to grow on me, but there's just so much there.
6. SMYT--I need to listen to this one some more. An all-around solid album that might climb in the ranks in the near future if I give it a few more spins.
7. COR--Starts out with a bang, and finishes with another one, but there's some not-quite-so-excellent material in the middle.
8. FB&TC
9. Pistolero--A few amazing songs, but too much subpar (for Frank, anyway) stuff to avoid the bottom spot.

This is subject to change at any moment. I really need to listen to the albums again. I'm thinking I might have ranked DW a little too high, and the first Catholics release a little too low.

This is hard.
1. Teenager of the Year
-I guess.. I've been listening to it for so long, having a break now. I'll play this for my wife in the future as a final test.

2. Black Letter Days
-Story of my life.

3. Frank Black and the Catholics.
-Playing at the moment, rocks so much. Six first songs would make a perfect EP.

4. Show Me Your Tears
-First I disliked a country feeling of this one, but it ends up to my player all the time.

5. Dog in the Sand
-Oh hell this is hard, fift place for a perfect album? This listing is irrational.

6. Frank Black
-This is how I found FB and Pixies, random choice from library years ago. Pure love.

7. The Cult of Ray
7. Pistolero
7. Devil's Workshop
-Few best songs from each would make perfect album, don't know any lousy song but don't listen to these so much.

"9 guys lining up at the Olympics" -theory of Mrgrieves1971 is what I think as well. Ramona also puts it nicely: "It is like chosing which kid is your favorite".

Question should be more simple; which artist is your top 1 obsession?

Now I'm just employed

I do like it, but today it is just not my top one. It is like chosing which kid is your favorite. I think it is changeable. When SMYT came out, it probably would have been higher but then I kinda burned myself out on it. It is an ever changing list.

This post should be sticky - this seems to pop up again and again. What is it about ranking that we all love so much? We must pick favorites!

I will play again,

1. BLD
2. DITS
3. FB & the c's
4. Devil's Workshop
5. SSMVGD (it is in my top 5 even if it is not "official")
6. TOTY

First time I've tried this one. It would probably change next week (although the top 2 would always remain unchanged).

1. Teenager of the Year
2. Frank Black
3. Dog in the Sand
4. Cult of Ray
5. Devil's Workshop
6. Pistolero

2. Teenager of the Year
3. Dog in the Sand
4. Show Me Your Tears
5. Black Letter Days
6. Frank Black & the Catholics
7. Devil's Workshop
8. Cult of Ray
9. Pistolero <--- only listened to once, yesterday.
mrgrieves1971 Posted - 03/03/2004 : 07:48:27
I think if TOTY had a few less tracks, it would be higher up there for me, but as a complete album, it's longer than it needs to be. DITS is his best, most complete album, end to end.

1. Dog In The Sand
2. Pistolero
3. Frank Black
4. Teenager Of The Year
5. Black Letter Days
6. Show Me Your Tears
7. Frank Black & The Catholics
8. Cult Of Ray
9. Devil's Workshop

By the way, this is like 9 guys lining up at the Olympics to run the 100 yard dash and the only difference between the guy that comes in first and the guy that comes in last is 1/2 a second. They are all top class Olympic athletes. Know what I'm saying?
