Saw this on an advert this morning. Never would have given it a second look except for BLD. Anybody ever seen it ? I'd be interested to go even though Burroughs would not be my really be my cup of tea. |

What happened was Burroughs tried to do a Wilhelm Tell and shoot a glass off his wife's head. He missed and killed his wife. Strange, tragic story.
Funnily I was discovering the beatnik writers such as Burroughs, Kerouac and Ginsberg the same time I was getting into the Pixies during the early nineties. If anyone wants to read Burroughs you have to start with the Naked Lunch, a strange but incredibly well written book. |

I'd recommend seeing the play too--though I haven't. The music (released by Waits under the same name) is some of Wait's best. I don't think Burroughs had that much to do with it--the principal writer is Robert Wilson. Wilson also collaborated w/ Waits for Alice--another album of music written for a play. He's most known for Einstein on the Beach, which I haven't seen. But he's worked with interesting people (David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Phillip Glass, Susan Sontag, Lou Reed, Allen Ginsberg), so it's probably worth looking into. |

yes indeed. I used to have 'the priest, they called him' on cd...very strange, avant-garde sounding shit. It's composed of Burroughs stream-of-consciousness spoken word abstractions with underlying guitar-noise a la Sonic Youth courtesy of Kurt.
Burroughs was in Drugstore Cowboy, but do you know that he also has a cameo in a Crispin Glover/Harry Dean Stanton flick called "Twister" that came out in 1990 (very unknown movie)...this film has also been brought up in a Crispin Glover thread a while back. He played a black-suited guy in a barn who was shooting a gun. Crispin's character, Howdy, is looking for his long-lost mother and Burrough's character tells him that she left the farm a while back. It's like, the ultimate amalgam of weird cult icons, I swear.....

Burroughs did a spoken piece to music by Kurt Cobain called 'The priest, they called him'-he played drug-addicted former priest Tom Murphy in the movie 'Drugstore Cowboy'. |

I would strongly recommend seeing this. It's the Tom Waits musical. It has some of the most beautiful songs he's ever written and it is rarely performed live. You're lucky, it's been like 10 years since they did it in the US.
